Here is the recording of my playing multiple ZIMs, with Genevieve Smith playing JAWS from 5:45-12:45 (the program she uses for reading & programming -- Genevieve cannot see). Danielle Emily Hoch painted and etched with waveform visualizations that were real-time mappings of our audio onto the planetarium dome.

Below is the text that Genevieve read using JAWS, starting at 5:45.
I have given (attributions) where I remember them.

Time - Interactions take place at fixed class times.
However, students who must miss a class due to illness or scheduling
conflicts can watch an archive that includes all video, audio, chat,
and other lecture presentation and interaction from the class period.
Of course, these students can interact with an instructor and peers
outside the class using Discussion Boards, Chat Rooms, Electronic Mail
and Phone calls. Therefore, even though R T V C emphasizes "Live Synchronous
(very short lag time)", it spans this dimension to "Asynchronous
(long lag time)" via the archives and other tools.

Perception is almost always an automatic and effortless process.
Light and sound in the environment seem to be almost magically transformed
into a complex array of neural impulses that are interpreted by the brain
as the subjective experience of the auditory and visual scenes that surround us.
This transformation of physical energy into “meaning” is completed within
a fraction of a second. However, the ease and speed with which the perceptual
system accomplishes this Herculean task greatly masks the complexity of the
underlying processes and often times leads us to greatly underestimate the
importance of considering the study of perception and cognition, particularly
in applied environments such as auditory display.

Quantum cognition uses the mathematical formalism of quantum theory
to inspire and formalize models of cognition that aim to be an advance
over models based on traditional classical probability theory.
The field focuses on modeling phenomena in cognitive science that have
resisted traditional techniques or where traditional models seem to have
reached a barrier (e.g., human memory), and modeling preferences in decision
theory that seem paradoxical from a traditional rational point of view
(e.g., preference reversals).
Since the use of a quantum-theoretic framework is for modeling purposes,
the identification of quantum structures in cognitive phenomena does not
presuppose the existence of microscopic quantum processes in the human brain.

A feedback system is defined as a modifying system whose output is returned
to its own input. In its most basic conception, feedback operates in nearly
every conceivable field of study, from astrophysics to evolutionary biology
to economics to philosophy. Within the last half-century or so, artists
of all types have begun to incorporate feedback into their works,
in literal (mechanical) and non-literal (metaphorical) ways.
As a technique, feedback has proven to be especially fruitful ground
for artistic exploration due to its unusual applicability to both the
conceptual and structural aspects of the medium to which is is applied.

Mankind flung its advance agents ever outward, ever outward.
Eventually it flung them out into space, into the colorless, tasteless,
weightless sea of outwardness without end.
It flung them like stones.

Compositional and performance experience with a wide variety of audio feedback
systems suggests a number of traits common to feedback processes.
These systems share not only certain sonic qualities, but also offer
highly linked relationships between pitch, timbre, amplitude and time
characteristics. These unconventional parameterizations, along with the often
unpredictable response of feedback systems to control and input,
lead almost necessarily to an improvisational approach
in composition and performance.

The mechanism of tone production in a saxophone is an example of coupled
(or feedback) excitation. By coupled we mean that the vibration of the
resonating part feeds back to the excitation part. For example,
the frequency of the vibrating reed is strongly influenced by acoustic
feedback from the resonating bore (tube) of the instrument, after being
excited initially by a blast of air from the mouth. (Roads)

Thanks, Jan, it IS fast! We are using Unified Modeling Language diagrams a lot in this course, and it turns out Genevieve can internalize a concise textual description of a UML diagram a lot faster than she can internalize a tactile diagram by tracing it with her finger. She has been using JAWS since she was 5 years old, is a grad student now. We are working on text-to-diagram and diagram-to-text software tools that she can take with her when she graduates.

We have another gig to do with just this ZIM number on April 1. I am going to fade the ZIM out linearly across the JAWS part, rather than in two steps as it is in this recording (it goes to like 1/4 ZIM at the start of JAWS, and 1/8 ZIM close to the end). That way, JAWS intelligibility should emerge like a voice out of the noise, linearly across the space of that part of the piece. I'll post that one here, too.

Thanks for listening. Smile

More pics by Linda Parson. The laser projector that planetarium director Phill Reed and I acquired via a grant last August is mostly running canned shows at present. I have software on order that will allow programming the lasers at a pretty low level. Scripts written in that language can talk to laptops over a LAN via the Open Sound Control protocol, and I plan to write an API for Processing, a Java graphics framework, over the next year or so.

Yes, thanks mostly to Jaymie and Steve. I hope to take some ZIM waveform painting/etching pics at the April 1 gig. April 1-2 is a conference of the computer science departments in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and other regional universities and colleges.

Also, am excited to be able to start programming the lasers this summer.

This is a fun job, although all this stuff all goes on in my "spare time", such as it is. Cool

April 1 demo for the http://www3.kutztown.edu/csit/pacise2016/ attendees, pic below.

Three sets of these two pairs of 17 X 11 posters will be hanging in the Provost's office, the Comp. Sci. hallway, and near the Kutztown University Planetarium soon. They are photos of live-performed graphical visualizations of our live-performed electro-acoustic music on April 1.

The images below are generated by sending stereo audio into a http://processing.org program, and then having a visual performer manipulate audio-to-graphic parameters similar to manipulating filters and other effects in a modular synth.

One problem for Processing is that its audio libraries are all limited to stereo. I am in the midst of learning SuperCollider (http://supercollider.github.io/), a high end audio language with great support for a spatial sound, for a spatial sound workshop later this summer. SC supports communication over a LAN via OSC (Open Sound Control) network protocol (http://opensoundcontrol.org/spec-1_0). OSC is a lot more flexible for sending control-rate data than DMX or MIDI, so by end of summer, I should have ways to do n-channel audio analysis in SC (where n >= stereo), and then send the results to Processing for visualization.

After that, the BEYOND software package that Phill Reed and I just installed from a grant (http://pangolin.com/BEYOND/features/features.html), while a custom scripting language, supports control via OSC over a LAN. Once I get time to write a Processing API to drive OSC to the lasers, any laptop that runs Processing can drive the lasers. Note also that Processing is just Java + a GUI + graphics libraries. So it will, in time, be possible to unify visualization of multi-channel audio on both raster projectors and laser projectors via a Processing/OSC integration.

All of which begs the first question, "When will I get time?" If I apply for a sabbatical this winter, it won't come until fall 2018 at the earliest.

All of which begs the second question, "When will I retire?"
