I'm going to post one photo per post, just to make sure they appear in the correct order.

Without further ado...

Needed to put Drylok on the concrete masonry. There has never been an exterior leak, but better safe than sorry.

Framing begins. This is where my work ends and the contractors take over. You can see on the right that exterior walls are double-leaf.

Here we hit our first snafu. I had Kinetics Noise Wallmat, which was supposed to go here. The contractors had never done this before, but fortunately...

The contractor foreman was a patient man who wanted to get it done right, so he took down the framing and reinstalled it with the Wallmat in the correct position. You can see that it even wraps the support beam.

Speaking of the support beam, we need Iso-clips for that.

Hooking up the power. Note that the rule here is outlet boxes cannot line up front-to-back.

Boxes had to be built to contain the overhead light units. It helps isolate the studio from upstairs. Otherwise, sound could leak around the light fixtures. These are boxes normally built for loudspeakers, but the acoustic consultant recommended them for the overhead lights. You can see a bit of hanging wire. They were hung from the ceiling to a height lower than the ceiling drywall, which results in the light boxes sitting on top of the gypsum board.

Oh, and all walls, and the ceiling, contains two layers of drywall. Type C and type X, I forget which was which.

Insulation. R15 went against the CMU, to which I objected, but the insulation installers did not ask questions and didn't seem too bright, and left before I found what they'd installed. Acoustic consultant said it should be OK. At least they installed the R19 in the exterior walls and ceiling correctly.

Drywall begins. I loved the drywall guy. He's a Vietnam vet, and survived a blast in the face. He loves to talk, and he's a super-interesting guy. Would have loved to have made friends with him, but I got the feeling that while he loves talking to people, he likes his quiet, solitary life.

Here you can see the HVAC return and a hole for the cable pass-through. The computer is going in the adjoining room to keep the computer noise elsewhere.

This photo shows several important things:

1. The tracks installed on the support beam Iso-clips.
2. Drywall on the tracks over support beam.
3. Wallmat used to hold drywall corner away from beam, making it easier to screw the drywall in. This was my idea.
4. Kinetics Noise WAVE Hanger ceiling system. 20 lb silver ties were used in corners (visible if you look closely), 40 lb black ties used elsewhere.
5. Special tape on walls to isolate ceiling drywall from wall drywall, to minimize sound transmission to ceiling. One important goal of this construction is to minimize sound going out of the studio to upstairs.

Contractor had a little trouble finding the correct tracks for both beam and ceiling, but he got it done.

Final prep on light boxes, including adhesive to help it sit on the ceiling drywall. Note that the hole for the electrical wires was sealed with acoustic caulk.

All drywall joints were sealed with acoustic caulk.

Space around electrical outlets was also sealed with acoustic caulk. (Not shown.)

Paint and baseboards. Acoustic caulk was squeezed into the floor-wall gap behind the baseboards. More on the bass traps later.

Bass trap construction. Everything went fine until I tried to stand one up. Well, it was brought into the studio on its side, and it was exactly the right height. You're probably nodding knowingly at this point. Yep, couldn't stand it up. I neglected to take the diagonal into account, so I had to cut them in half. It actually worked better that way because that made them easier to carry. I stacked them up without much trouble.

Well, couldn't find any photos of the door installation, and if I forgot to do that while it was under construction, I'm an idiot. But here are photos of the final setup.

More photos.

Still testing all connections at this point.

I had an Ikea desk. The desktop was very cheap and was bowing in the center, so I built my own desktop out of OSB and 2x4. The unit holding up the rack case in the corner I also built, because I wanted something that would hide the bundles of cables meeting at that point on the floor.

The room is very quiet. I'm happy with the interior acoustics. It has a couple of things I need to track down and fix, though. I can hear the dogs when they go nuts upstairs, as they do whenever a random squirrel goes by. This is probably borne through the ventilation system. I know HOW to fix it, but unfortunately, the manufacturers of the devices I need sell to companies, not individuals, and I'm having trouble tracking down companies that will sell HVAC noise products to individuals.

I can hear someone coming down the basement stairs. This might be borne through the construction, or there might be a leak in/around the door.

I can hear one of the cats meowing if he's right outside the door. I definitely should not be able to hear that, and I'm hoping it's because the wall between the studio and the computer closet is not completely sealed on the closet side. I will take care of that and reevaluate.

I also need to seal the cable pass-through around the edges. Easy enough to do.

Wow. Hardcore stuff!

How loud can you go in the room itself and not be heard outside the house?

Being all technical and shit, being heard outside the house is actually not a problem. Our nearest neighbors are far enough away to make that not matter. What I wanted to accomplish was not being heard upstairs - and I seem to have done that. As a test, I played some material, cranked it up to where the woofers were pumping hard, and my girlfriend could not hear it from the upstairs living area.
