RY-30 won't respond to MIDI notes [SOLVED] |
|
|
It syncs just fine, to MIDI, and it will send MIDI out, but no matter how I fiddle with the MIDI settings it doesn't seem to want to respond to MIDI in.
I'd like to be able to play it from Live, so I don't have to program the patterns in the RY-30's little LCD screen. Last edited by Regebro on Wed Mar 15, 2017 7:50 am; edited 1 time in total |

It has settings per channel on what should happen (drum sounds, playing a bass sound, changing patterns) but it seems it's actually in Omni mode, and only channel 1 makes a difference!
There is no setting mentioning any Omni mode. Very strange. |

I don't know anything about that module, but I did look at the manual on line (I used the one at archive.org). On the version that I had p. 45 an p. 71 went into the midi receive settings. Did you systematically try each of those modes on the various channels? If so, do any of them do what the manual says they should do?
If you have the RY-30 set up to sync to an external midi source, I'd take that as a sign that you have midi coming in. From there, I'd test sending every type of midi data on every channel with each of the receive mode settings to see if any midi data does anything it is supposed to do--other than midi sync (which evidently works).
Maybe you tried all of these. If so, sorry for the general advice; was just trying to be helpful w/o knowing anything other than what's in the manual.
Steve
PS: I did not look to see how omni mode is implemented in the RY-30. On all gear that use I almost always use multitimbral mode so I can have different presets/patches/CCs/etc. of different channels. Most gear I have used in omni mode will respond to midi data coming in on any channels but only plays notes on one channel (i.e., is not multimbral, though I have seen variations. |

The manual at archive.org looks the same as the one at Yamaha. The midi implementation chart says the default is mode 3: omni off, poly and it is not changeable. That is probably why the manual says nothing about those mode changes.
It looks like p. 45 and p. 71 spell out how to assign different midi channels to the different per channel functions the RY-30 can do.
Hope you can get it to work the way you want.

Have you double checked your midi flow to make sure the midi in connected to the RY-30 is transmitting data on anything other than midi channel 1? |

Thanks for the reply!
I did verify all that, and finally wondered if my MOTU MIDI Express had gone crazy and was remapping all the channels, and when trying to verify that I remembered I had a MIDITech Through/Filter box between the MOTU and the RY30, and it has gone crazy and remaps everything to channel 1, despite the switch to do that is off.
It's new, so I'll guess I have to send it back, unless I can factory reset it or something. |
