I am working on an update of a song I did a few years ago. Lately, I have had a disturbing problem: about 1 out of 4 or 5 times that I store this performance into the G2X, the instrument locks up and loses the performance. Fortunately I have been saving copies to disc as well, and have been able to restore my work (or most of it.) Note that the performance plays fine and I have never seen a "corrupt patch" message.

However, things get even messier. I am able to save the patch to disc and reload it, but backups are another story. Anytime I do a "bank upload" of this bank, followed by a download (to an empty bank on EITHER of my G2s) , I get an "error in synth" message when the download reaches this performance. I would like to do the flash memory wipe discussed in another thread, but I am not confident in these backups.

So, questions:

1) WTF?
2) Is there a way to backup and restore G2 data via MIDI Sysex? I know the synths can do this but I do not have the tools.
3) The thread that discusses the flash erase (http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-31827-100.html.) mentions other system test tools built in to the G2 but I'm reluctant to even try these without knowing more. Does anyone have any documentation on the SYS tests?
4) It sounds like this may have something to do with the fact that I am using 1.62. Can I safely downgrade to 1.4 on both synths, and then use this with the 1.62 editor? Will perfs saved under 1.62 still load?
5) Is this frigging backup download problem discussed anywhere? Is there a solution?

TIA.

And just to make this a happy post.. here is a pic of my band with me on G2s.

Hi Jamos,

I remember encountering exactly the same bug when storing big performances under OS 1.62. Downgrading to 1.4 did the trick.

To my knowledge and personal experience, there is no problem using OS 1.4 with the most recent editor version. At least that's what I did, and I didn't have any issues whatsoever.

Thx Tim. I will probably be doing this later this week after I convince myself that I have good backups.

Interestingly, this performance contains a modified version of one of your granular loopers.. I use a randomized capture algorithm to select one of 4 or 5 capture points, storing about a measure's worth of vocals; I then mangle this loop with knobs at the end of the song. Fun x 10^6!

You mean fun x 2^24. The G2 is a 24 bit fixed point system after all. Mr. Green
