neat Very Happy

however,..
Quote:
Will it last? I guess that's to be seen. I've only patched each point about 10 times, some less. I can see the vias in the top board wearing out eventually..

because it's a friction fit (there are no springy contacts) and solder is pretty soft I am afraid they won't last very long.
But time will tell. It's worth a shot. (maybe not having them tin plated might be better)

There are small banana connectors that might work better, also gives you something to hold on to.

(let me see if I can find them)

edit:
hmm, the ones I had in mind actually don't have any spring contacts either but I did come across these 2mm ones:

Phobos: Thanks as always for the feedback. (1K tone.....) Very Happy

using springy pegs is a great idea! They should last longer. Can I p,lease get a link please to the small springy bananas in your photo.

I would then try using larger wirepads for the pancho vias.

Bonus: Maybe "banana peg" could also be used as a mult using banana patch cable w/ appropriate grounding setups!

I can give you the link but as you will see it's pretty useless.

I came across it by doing an image search for 2mm banana plug/connector, so maybe you can find something useful doing that.
this search shows some similar ones.

good luck with that Very Happy (I mean that in the most positive way)

Hey Phobos! Got your suggestion of a 2.5mm banana w/ springs working--thanks! Very Happy Found the plugs on amazon, not expensive.

This seems way more durable.

I was also thinking of using some sort of .1mil 4x connectorization for hookup, if the top board does wear out, replacing it would be easy, just bolt in a new one and reconnect. Might redesign the top board for that.

awesome! Very Happy

How easy is it to insert the connectors straight ? It might benefit from some spacer boards in between for which you could use another PCB.
Since PCBs are rather cheap to produce you could design some seperate ones for this with slightly larger holes and without any pads/through
hole plating. Those should last forever. Just one board in between (so 3 PCBs in total) might already be enough. Or you could keep it a bit more
DIY and use wood or plastic and drill some holes in it.

Using connectors to make it easy to replace the boards sounds like a good idea.

I've been using these at 4mm in pcb holes.
I see they're available for 2mm.
Work fine, just a little solder time.

You can see from one of the photos that they don't always go straight in Shocked You can bump 'em around and get em to make contact but I think putting a 3rd board sandwiched in there with say 85mil drills and no vias would be a great improvement. When I redo for 4x1mil connectorization I'll get that going as well. Thanks for another great suggestion.

Piedwagtail can you please give a bit more detail? Would you solder these into the top layer board to make the via contacts tougher?

yes, tougher than pcb traces and they hold the plugs vertically as well as typical sockets.

Very cool. I have never seen these before. Piedwagtal Do you know what size would work for 2.5mm spring banana plugs? And, any ideas where I could get these in the US? I'd like to get some to mess around with, it's an interesting part, for this project or maybe something else, I could see these as being super cool for Lunetta work in general.

The 2mm ones will be for the small bananas.
It's a french company.

You can ask if they have a US distributor - best to do a google translate of your question into basic french to help the inquiry.

Let's motorize our pursuit.

2mm eyelets are available inexpensively in the crafts world. EG:

https://www.etsy.com/market/2mm_eyelets

I bought 100 2mm x 3mm ones from Amazon very cheap. Got them yestewrdayl. They fit the 2.5mm bananas fine, so I'll see what I can do with those.

There are also 2mm x 5mm eyelets I want to try. I see no reason why they won't work.

I have another run of boards to do soon and will do a run of 5 or so that accommodate 2mm eyelets and report back.

One more tidbit: I have a 4x 4051 MUX board working as well for this, so I have 2 solutions. Gonna use the MUX in the Lunetta project. Not sure what I will use the Putney thing for yet.
