Hi all,

I got inspired by recent discussions about using the frequency shifter to create drum timbres, and this was the result. Crank up the reverb and play some low notes. BadaBOOM!

One of the subjects of discussion was how to avoid the rhythmic 'Wubwubwub' caused by the frequency shifter being set to low ratios like 7 Hz. One idea I tried was running the audio signal through three notch filters in series, tuned to the fundamental, second, and third harmonics, to eliminate these components from the signal before sending it to the frequency shifter (the filters must be set to track the pitch of the audio signal). I also sent the source signal through band pass filters set to the the same frequencies to isolate these same components so they could be re-combined with the signal AFTER the frequency shifter. The result is that these three harmonics essentially 'bypass' the frequency shifter so it never 'sees' these specific harmonics, which are largey responsible for the wubwubwub effect, and the shifted signal sounds smoother.

However, for realistic drum sounds, it actually sounded better (to me, anyway) to send the unfiltered signal through the shifter. I mention this idea because it may be useful for other applications, like sustained pitched sounds.

Good idea Dave - it certainly does sort out the 'wubwubwub' as you call it. Personally, I use FM for the 'beater' sound and feel that you get more 'oomph' from sine or triangle waves, but it's a good idea all the same and it's always interesting to see how other people go about such things.

Sounds quite realistic Dave, much more so than any other drum sound I've heard out of a synth. Massive toms - I like Very Happy

Yes very interesting.
I was going to mention how it reminds me a little of some electro toms, but with so many other aspects too. Almost timpani like in some ways.
And yes totally interesting how the frequency shifter is dealt with differently here.
