The Audio Midi Setup app has only an icon set called "generic" available.

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

You will of course want to add your own icons.

See? Cool Clavia icons! Much better!

The icons are located in Library/Audio/Midi Devices
You can structure the icons by using "bundles". In this context a bundle simply means a folder with a name like "moog" and inside of this one you will have to create a folder called Images. Obviously the icons go into the Images folder. When the Audio Midi Setup app is launched it will read the Library/Audio/Midi Devices folder and collect the list of available bundles.

The picture below shows what my Library/Audio/Midi Devices folder looks like:

The Audio Midi Setup app will "eat" many different image formats, but I think the best approach is using Apple´s own scheme.

First off all, these images are tiff files with transparency. The file ending is .tiff and the dpi MUST be 72 dpi. The max size is 128 by 128 pixels.
Any decent image editor can create such files. In order to make the transparency work you will have to be sure the image is on a layer and is not flattened.

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

You can use any suitable selection tool for selecting the areas in the image that is supposed to be transparent. After doing that you simply delete the selected pixels.

Below is the save file dialog from Photoshop 8. This setup works great.

In order to help you out I have created a few simple sets already. Please download the attached .dmg file and put these folders into Library/Audio/Midi Devices . You can open the files with an image editor and see how they were made. There is not anything complex about this at all.

hi there...

if you use "png" format and 128*128 size, you can use the very same icons inside Logic7, too. (Logic reads only that).
I made a humble automator script that converts any picture to that size.

(humble, because it doesn't deal with transparency and you have to adjust the file paths. It's only for people who want some fast little icon. The script also at the end opens two folders in order to proceed managing stuff)

So anyway: if you think the other way round, you can visit http://www.logicprofiles.com and use those many icons there!

New Icons I made for Akai (MPC 1000, 2000xl and 2500), Behringer (BCR2000), Ensoniq (SQ80), Korg (EA2, ER2, MS2k), Kurzweil (K2000r), Roland (Alpha Juno1) and Yamaha (QY70, TG55, TX802).

All of these look pretty good, I adjusted the contrast and transparencies.

I´ll have to look over this again and make a zipped set. There are possible stuff in 10.5 I´ll have to look into as well.
