The Triton is a highly advanced polkaboard. It is not a bad synth at all, but it is as Carlo says, not even remotely close to a G2. A Triton is a different concept altogether.

The triton is one of worst machine I ever used. Good for big new age pads and so on, but very weak for electronic kind of sounds. I've bought it to challenge myself doing some good analog-ish sounds. I have to tell that the little "secret" is the MS-20 Saw i've sampled from my real unit (before selling it) and I've noticed great changes in the sounds produced by the polkarack.

I know that those aren't kickass sounds but now I know that good taste sounds can be made even on a older rompler. well, I still don't understand why ppl sell those items to pick up "brand new" (read: repackaged old Razz

) romplers. Rolling Eyes

This is basically a new class of synthetic instruments. By the mid 80s the selling point was easily accessible sounds and a lot of them.

A polkaboard is easy to recognise. It has very few controls. You will see only a calculator pad and a little display.

The main problem was how to design instruments with a lot of presets and manufacture these in quantities and at a price all these guys could afford:

About 10 years ago this trend changed. We are now seeing real synths again with decent controls. The polkaboards and polkaracks are still with us though. The Nord Stage is such a beast too. There is of course nothing wrong with a polkaboard as such. There is a market for these things.
