Here's the manual

I'm at work now, and can't start mutating for another 6 hours or so
Where's that flue patch when I need it ) Last edited by cappy2112 on Wed Jan 18, 2006 4:27 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Yeah- Remember the Boss Key on Battle Chess (that's a DOS game from the Mid-80's, for all the youngsters out there) ) ? |

Before this gets going too far, I'm wondering if we should use some sort of (filename) notation for patches that need to be loaded via the 1.40 editor
Thoughts anyone... |

...i wouldn't bother unless some real new bug issues or incompatibility shows up, giving a good reason not to upgrade.

Why? My guess is that everyone would like to update and V1.4 is backwards compatible. There hasn't been such a proposal when V1.1, V1.2 and V1.3 were released, so why now?
The only thing that needs to be taken care of is to refresh your preferences file manually with the Setup menu item, which is hardly a reason not to update.
V1.4 does also fix some bugs, so there is sound reason to update.

Btw, this little performance has nothing to do with the mutator or quick adjustments, those functions were not used to create the models or make the sounds. Module locks are just applied in a way that the mutator shouldn't destroy the models. But some bugfixes in V1.4 do make it possible to e.g. load the patch in the first slot at all. E.g. pre-V1.4 versions had a limitation of 256 cable segments, using more would lead to a system crash. Apparently nobody reached that limit before and it was only two months ago that I reached it myself. If you try to replicate that bug in a pre-V1.4 release, be sure to first save whatever is in your slots.

I do have a remark about the mutator. In the manual you will read that it is a function that will sort of allow for easy sound creation without specific knowledge of what actually goes on in a patch. This will surely be of great help to many people, but the initial patches will still have to be created. To be able to patch new synth models it appears to me that some basic knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge will still be necessary. As a tool like the mutator will not cater in this respect. It is my estimation that only relatively few people will create these new models in a way that they can be used by others. So, the responsibility and burden to lock and unlock modules before publishing a patch that actually contains a new model seems for only a few people at first sight. If a specific pre- or postfix would be necessary my guess is that it would have to apply to an original patch that is especially created to cater for specific mutator use. But no doubt very soon patches would be published that would be mutated variations on those originals and still contain those pre-/postfixes. These mutated patches could have module locks removed for a single case that just happens to be liked by some mutator user (a happy accident so to speak). Such lock removals could create a situation where the mutator would not do musically viable things anymore on the idea of the model (resulting in a continuous stream of not so happy accidents). E.g. imagine that the stability of a feedback loop relies on two knobs that have only one single combined setting where stability is guaranteed. Removing locks that would apply to those two knobs would actually create a chance of only one in over sixteenthousand for a stable result that will not explode or implode a sound. So, a sensible use of locks could soon be lost when a synth model starts to roam the planet. Of course I base this assumption on my (by default limited) experiences with human nature and I might be totally wrong, but I guess you get my point if you delve a little deeper in using the mutator.
As the G2 system is an open and free environment with no preprogrammed restrictions on what one can change in a patch (in contrast to e.g. protected macro's in other systems, and it is my strong opinion that the G2 system should remain that way) I do urge people to consider that what others will do to your finely crafted sounds is first apply the mutator to hear what else your patch can do. If you would want the mutator to give results that you think are in accordance with what you think is musically viable you should give it a very good thought which modules to lock and which to keep unlocked. And to those of you that plan to make extensive use of the mutator function; be aware that removing locks on modules in patches you download should be done with ample consideration. |
