Any advantage to getting NM Keyboard over the Rack version? |
|
|
I've been leary of asking this, but have not read anything in my searhes that addresses the benefits of getting the NM Keyboard unit over the NM Rack version. So if I may ask...
1: Does the Keyboard have more default memory (or expansion) than the Rack version?
2: Does the Keyboard model work the same as the Rack version, i.e. can it be played with another master keyboard.?
3: Can either be synced with my Host (Live 5) BPM time settings?
4: Other than the keys, what does the Keyboard version bring to the table that the Rack version doesn't?
Sorry for the NUBE questions, but I am wondering if the Keyboard is really worth the extra money spent over the Rack version.
Thanks in advance for fielding my questions.

yes, you may...

no, both have the same capabilities.

nothing
i like the small, minimal keyboard.
if you need/want a larger/better master keyboard, get the rack version.
best regards

Also note that the Rack has a led for incomming MIDI messages that the keyb lacks and that can be highly convenient.
On the other hand; the Keyb can send MIDI notes and so could work as a master keyboard in a pinch. That can be quite convenient since you can set the midi channel of the active slot to the jog dial and so you can very quickly scan all 16 channels.
Slaving a NM to Live is very easy and very pleasant indeed fo live loop manipulations; I recomend it. _________________ Kassen |

Maybe the Midi clock send on version 5 is more stable. Having said this, I haven't tried syncing to Live since installing OS 1.4 into G2 - There is definitely an improvement in slaving to Cubase SX. I haven't spent nearly enough time with Ableton, but my impression is that it's great for audio looping, splicing, manipulation, but not as a Midi sequencer / master clock. |

Thanks guys, it doesn't look like there is very little difference between the two except for the keyboard and MIDI light. Although, it might be nice to have another keyboard around.
At present my master keyboard is a Kawai KS5000, a really nice keyboard.
What would be a good US Dollar price to pay for either of the NM units? Right now, it looks like I will have to pay around $550 USD for a Rack version and about $625 for a Keyboard. Does this seem about right or should I wait till the price comes down more?
Thanks again for fielding my questions.

Those prices seem accurate, and have been there for several years now. I don't know that it would drop any lower. However, it's very much worth it!
(unless you saved for a used G2 engine + a cheap midi controller, such as a behringer BCR2000 - extreme value in that as well) |

I've been putting together a spreadsheet of pricing of both and when I buy I'll pretty much have to pay what I've already found. I'll buy as soon as I sell a couple of things on eBay. I have a Echo Layla3G card and a Simac Ice cream maker auctions starting Wednesday. If my auctions sell, that will allow me the funds for a NM.
As for being worth the price, eveyone seems to feel this as well, so I am really anxious to get one.

I have the BCF2000 controller and it works flawlessly in Live5. Definitely worth the cost... Very inexpensive.
Thanks for the input.

random interjection: i just saw a USED g1 rack going to $1399 at guitar center! i was wondering, has it already passed the "outdated" point and reached "vintage"?

Nah, that should be tight.
Anyway, the point to me of syncing Live and the NM is the vertical Live schreen and cubase etc don't do stuff that way. _________________ Kassen |
