So by now, a few of you are probably aware of the wreckless, un-necesary, experimental comp tech involving working on your song at a micro-audio level.

In other words, this is where you slow you song down 2X or more, and then you work in rythyms using synth (with pitch dropped Smile ) where you actually layer-in your synth tracks while you are recording in Slo-Mo.

I think that this can produce some amazing results, if you don't get too carried away with it...using the tech for a whole song might not be realistic, but if you are looking for that 1-measure-wonder to jazz up a vacant part of your song, then use the above mentioned tech.

There are more advanced methods of doing the above-mentioned technique, there is no need to go into details here, pursue it if you feel it is your type of tech.

take care

Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, (half the original Human League) used a tape version of this technique in the 70's, first for the boys of budda horn section I think.
I like the effect, in addition to the precise but still human timing, the subtle formant shifts can create interesting tones.

Wasn't it "Voice of Buddha"?

Yes that was the name of the track of the 2nd album. They credited the synthetic horn section to the 'boys of buddha'. They used the same technique and name later as the BEF. Wasn't a huge fan of Human League after the split but I did like the Hard Times 12".

Just out of historical interest; the track was called "Being Boiled".

Now, that was gooood times! Reproduction and Travelogue - real daring stuff and a smashing way to kick off the eighties (as opposed to Dare...) Very Happy

Embarassed I'm better at remembering lyrics than titles. 'Toyota City' is still one of my favorite tracks of all time.

I sometimes like to work on the micro-level with the control data (MIDI), and sort of let the audio live it's own life. In this scheme, the actual audio can be microscopically controlled by a combination of tweaking synthesis and control. Not the same thing as slowing down time though, but still a style of microscopic composition. This is natural for me since I usually stay in the MIDI domain until recording the stereo master... Of course, time can be slowed down with MIDI too for real time work, but you don't get any interesting formant shifts as a bonus Smile

That's it! Being boiled! God it's so long since I heard that track. I've got "Three into One" by pre Midge Ultravox. Great stuff, another band that started out great and suddenly lost it! John Foxx went on to do some ground breaking electronics though.
That would've been around the time I first plugged the trigger out from my 606 (Drumatix) into my SH101 and, .... well I haven't been the same since (thank God!)

this tech is not a good idea at all if you do performances though. youd have to samle in all you 2X synth manually, and that would kind of suck if you didn't do it right.
