I have an archive of patches for the DX7 given to me by my former teacher, William Hoskins, before he passed away. These are on cassette tapes, in some kind of audio format. I still have an original TX7. I believe I could read them into the synth, but what then?

Does anyone know of a way I can recover these patches to some digital format where people can use them, perhaps with a soft version of the DX7? Hoskins was a master synthesist. I want to make sure these patches are not lost forever. If I could recover them, I could put them up on the patch archive.

Thanks in advance.

If you could digitize them, you'd probably find they're basically SYSEX files but represented with a kinda of square wave. Might be a fun little project.

It would be eazy to record them as digital audio, but how would I convert them to SYSEX messages? Don't I need a codec of some sort.

Maybe there is some sort of DX7/TX7 librarian program that is around for free. Do you know of any?

If you can load them into the TX7, and if the TX7 can do a midi sysex dump, then you're all set. Any librarian or midi utility type program will do.

Hi Mosc.I replied in the FM7 patches thread by mistake. There is a now freeware sysex Librarian that will support dumps from the TX7 and it's called Soundlib:http://www.sonicspot.com/soundlib/soundlib.html

It will convert dumps from the DX7 into sysex files that the FM7 can read.I'd be very interested in checking out the DX patches you have.Old Dx patches just come to life with the added features of the FM7.Let me know if I can help!

Thanks, guys. I've got enough information to proceed on this project. Seem the hard part will to get a cassette player, setting up the old TX7 and getting it to read in the patches. That was a flakey procees even in the 80s when the gear and tapes were new.

OH, God, I wish you wouldn't have asked. I'm still looking for the cassette tapes. I know I have them somewhere. I'd never forgive myself if I lost them. Crying or Very sad

On no! That would be a real tragedy.Although there are thousands of Dx patches on the net I seem to keep running into the same ones.To add new blood to the gene pool would be a blessing.Sounds like your teacher would have some gems.I still have some patches from my old teacher Cosmo Watts on the Atari format but no way to port them over to the Pc. Confused

I've got to get myself up in the attic and find these tapes. There are many of his compositions up there too. I need to digitize these to preserver them.

well you know i am here for you and any other tx816 tx81z pss480
owner ..
i do programming for synthesizers on my older atari computer , and have ten years experience playing with these devices,

i would love to help with the tapes , but have no hands on expertise in that area ,

what i do know is that my yamaha rx11 drum programmer has this same characteristic ,

where it can save dumps to cassette ,

and

if i study this format , should be able to decipher
your dumps visually ,,,

my aim is to have you record onto your pc using the input jack
these cassettes into ...wav files

then we can use oscilliscope or harmonic anylaser to transcribe frequencies into data...
its sounds easy but with a sound having so many different properties reading these values may take more deciphering
especially since values can be bit wise operands
and if last comes to last , you send me the tapse and i will have my buddy here in town who lectures synthesis at a local college
supervise me while i use his dx for the bulk dumps.

i only own a tx81z , tx816 , pss380...
used to own dx7 for first 4 years of tinkering.

charles
