Anyone who knows software vocoders PLEASE help! I use FL studio 6 as my platform and the included Fruity Vocoder as well as the AKAI DC Vocoder. I record my vocals then write a synth piece on the piano roll and run them together through either vocoder to make my voice sing the right notes. Here's the questions: 1) Do you know of any software synthesizers or synthesizer settings that are best to use in combination with a software vocoder to get the clearest, cleanest sound. I want to keep the voice sounding like the voice as much as possible (the less robotic the better) and still use the vocoder to shape the notes and melody of it. (since i cannot sing) i get different results with each synth i use but am not satisfied with the sound.
2) when using a software vocoder, to get a clean crisp sound, is it good to use a compressor, EQ etc.
3)do you know of a software vocoder that works better than the 2 i use to get a sound that retains the values of the human voice the clearest?
THANKS SO MUCH!

Vocoders tend to sound like vocoders, which is what a lot of people like. If you want realism, you could try the phase vocoder in csound (free) but it is so good it would probably just sound like pitch corrected vocals (which is another option). Csound is not so easy to use though.
A talkbox like Roger used can give more natural results but is a hardware only option.

thanks for the tip. i want either a realistic sound (like it was pitch shifted- are there any pitch shifters that can be used with a piano roll style, pre-set notes?) or a clean and super intelligible vocoder as a VST that I can use within FL studio.

I don't use any soft vocoders, but I do use the vocoder in the G2. It's best to use a synth sound that is very simple. A very narrow pulse wave works very well.

That could be celemony melodyne, not precisely a vocoder, isn't free, but works marvelous.

Look for Melodyne Uno

If you want to fix vocals, Melodyne is an option. It isn´t quite realtime.
Roland has a keyboard which mean vocoding machine:

I don´t think it is useable for lead vocals though.
