In response to the opening of the Rokkasho nuclear reprocessing plant and the associated dangers that go along with the plant’s operation, on May 16th, electronic musician Ryuichi Sakamoto launched an international campaign to raise awareness of the risks of nuclear energy and to raise awareness of renewable alternatives.

The stop-rokkasho message is even more crucial now that the Japan Times has reported that Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd., whose spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, has a design flaw, a miscalculation for earthquake resistance, that its maker, a subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd., allegedly kept secret for 11 years until it was reported last Thursday.

Renewable alternatives? What renewable alternatives?? Nuclear power is only dangerous, if it is managed by idiots. Fortunately most of the time, it isn't. Most of our power in Europe comes from nuclear energy. The Japanese are very good at learning from their mistakes. We shouldn't overlook this. This campaign stinks of a publicity stunt on behalf of mr Sakamoto? I guess he's run out of money?

It's taken me 30 or so years to realise that if we want our CO2 emmissions lowered, we are going to have to accept that nuclear energy is the only alternative. For example, to build wind farms, we will need to pump an awful amount of CO2 into the atmosfere just to keep them working! Sometimes I feel the Green New World Order feel that we can get energy from nothing. Canada are terrible culprits- who are lucky enough to have access to hydro-electric power. Not all of us have this luxury.

Kraftwerk's old manager is Ian Flooks- who, surprise, suprise, is one of the directors of Greenpeace (or he was when they had offices in my old town of Lewes in Sussex). Kraftwerk should stick to making music IMO, and should stay away from being scientists- which they are not.
