The tubes used in the Fairchild limiter are reputed to be rare as hen's teeth...

It all depends on what you want to do

the dual triodes are useful
usually 12XX7 (the XX meaning a lot of different letters, say AU, AX, AT)

6L6, 6V6, EL34, 6SN7, EF86, 5751
These appear in many amps.

for FX and synths - 6BN6, 6AR8, 6JH8 (see CGS tube page)
Thyratrons are good for VCOs - 2D21, 5727

Also eye-tubes - http://www.vacuumtube.com/eyetubes.htm
and nixies are worth grabbing, at least if they are cheap.

this list could be huge....

Sure- if they are cheap grab a boxful, tho you may end up with a pile of rectifiers and old tv pentodes.
oh yeh - generally tubes with good brandnames are worth getting - telefunken is treasure, most USA companies are good, chinese tubes are bottom of the list.
