Background / Temperature Tuning - Yes or No? |
 |
|
So I've read several places about Andromeda users switching off the background tuning options partially or fully in order to make the board sound more analog and encourage a certain amount of pitch drift.
I'd love to hear some opinions / experiences from people here. What settings do you use your board on?
Personally I want the most organic, analogue sound possible, but I am wary of switching off any tuning features since the Andromeda is the center of my live setup...and I feel messing around with the tuning features may not be the smartest idea(!)
Still I wonder if people really notice any difference in sound turning those features off. To my ears, the Andromeda is pretty analogue sounding as it is, I do hear a certain amount of pleasing pitch drift even with the background tuning features on.

| I tried a post I read somewhere. after fully tuning the voices by hitting AUTOTUNE button twice, I switched OFF the Background tuning and left on the TEMPERATURE TUNING. after about a week, my voices were slightly off. then even later, a couple of them were off enough I didn't want to use them. Yes, it seemed a little bit old school etc, but I went ahead and turned background tuning back on. I didn't enjoy the "analog drift" because it had gotten non-musical to my ear. my experiences |

I agree with wwjd. I was very intrigued by this (particularly after some tuning teething probs) so I did the 'switch off b tuning, leave it a bit.' Mine didn't drift hideously but... I couldn't really see the point. It didn't add anything magical and I'd rather have the accuracy. To my ears the A6 sounds analogue enough with all the tuning stuff left on.
But, as with wwjd, this is just my personal preference! Give it a go when you've got no gigs. _________________ My music: here! |

| Thanks--- this pretty much confirms what I suspected, intuitively. I imagine I'll keep the tuning stuff on. |

temptuning is a function of the chips themself, so leave it on, it hardly affects the sound.
background tuning however is performed by the a6 processor, it leads to a kind of portamento when playing fast. therefor it's better to be left off. |

Off / off personally.
We're talking subtleties here, but I *do* find that the "background tuning" feature actually does affect the Alesis Andromeda sound. With it on, the synth becomes a little more clinical, a little less organic. Leaving the tuning off just seems to fit in bands' sounds better. And, it's pretty easy to turn on the tuning if you notice any drifting.
Temperature tuning doesn't affect the sound that much, so if you are absolutely concerned about maximum organic sound with minimal pitch drift, turn that on. Having only temp tuning on isn't a cure all, though, extreme temperature changes can knock the synth out of tune.
Background tuning is the "safest" option, if you don't have time to tune before your set or if you notice drifting in your set, you can turn it back on. |

| I guess it could be said also, each A6 will be different. I could tell you the exact two voices that went way out of tune on mine, but it would be different than yours. Maybe your variances would be just slightly enough to make it cool. You have nothing to lose trying it for a while and can always hit the tune button when ever you like |
