Here is an interesting ChucK bug, I think it is known but I need a way to work around it. The attached file is my microphone / guitar / drum controller for The ChucK Show. It is written with MAUI so it only works on a Mac right now.

The problem is that there is a bunch of stuff going into the dac and ChucK freaks out and buzzes when I press the UFO button. As the file is posted the bug is fixed but the drums are not hooked up to the output. To see things work, just run the program and click on the UFO button, you will hear the Close Encounters UFO theme which is one of the sound effects of the program. Then to see the bug, comment out line 201 and uncomment line 202, then run it and click on the UFO button. You should hear the same UFO song but buzzy and slow.

What is going on and how do I fix it?

Les

Well I got around the problem by realizing that a drummer is not an octopus. I had created a drummer with eight sticks by using eight instances of the drum class. Now it has a one-handed drummer, and I may add a second hand, we'll see. Anyway, what's the bug? It's bugging me!

I know what a tease it is to not have MAUI because you're running Linux and/or Windows, so here is an image of the controller GUI. You can see that I just gave the drummer a second hand, so now it's a two-handed drummer (by the fact that there are two rows of buttons in the 8-step sequencer). This should be fun on the show.

I don't hear any drums, and swapping lines 201 and 202 doesn't make any difference for the Close encounters sound...

OK, that verifies the problem actually. My computer is a slow old G5 eMac and it can't handle what I programmed. On my system when you do as I said the UFO sound goes bad, but I imagine that you have a faster Mac so you get no problems. I have noticed other CPU intensive appliciations do the same thing on my system.

So I solved the problem by reducing the octopus drummer to a human drummer and also by unChucKing unused Ugens.

Thanks for testing out the program!
