I still have not purchased a portable recorder and am thinking of it again!

I was thinking of the Sony PCM-D10 or the Olympus LS-11.

Anybody got one of these and what are they like?

Also any other devices I should look at?

Thanks for any help

Andy

I have the Olympus LS-10 and can recommend it for general recording. Most of my files in this forum has been recorded with it. One area where it does not excel is with quiet sounds, you start hearing the peramp hiss then, but otherwise it is a good sounding recorder if you don't need phantom power. I am pretty sure (although not 100%) that the LS-11 uses the same preamps. Oh, and the battery time is amazing on the LS10!

The Sony will probably be quieter, although I would definitely want to try it out before buying. It looks like it is smaller and much easier to handle than the Olympus. I don't know much about it though.

If you want an other alternative, try one of the Tascams, they have sounded good to my ears in the past.

Reading up a little on the Sony, it looks like a good recorder - but most of all, the 5 second pre-recording buffer could be very useful for me! Saves you a lot of editing if you are sitting there waiting for a special sound to appear. Of course, the track marker does a similar job - IIRC the LS-11 has track marker facilities. And enough memory.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the info.

I'm up in London at the weekend and will see if there are any music shops still around and have a listen if possible.

Cheers

Andy

Sony, right - better read the specs a couple of times & check the internets .. they bit me once a looong time ago with some foolish DRM scheme; that was my last Sony.
