One of the good things that has evolved on this site is the lively repartee and light-hearted banter. This is usually OT, but so what. If there is something significantly OT that warrants it, we can split off the posts and start a new topic. I'm a little concerned, though, that this might be harmful in certain cases, like on the introduce yourself (IY) forum.

In the case of Happy Elf, for example, Cyx suggested we had hijacked that topic. I think maybe he's right. This is starting to happen in another IY topic, too.

It seems to me that the IY forum should be treated differently. I'm not saying we shouldn't joke around there, but the jokes should be relevant to the new person in some way.

I'm trying not to overreact. I'd like the IYs to be sorta like dedicated to just the topic of the individual or band. These will evolve to more like full forums when I get the sub-categories working.

FYI, I received this in the email from a really good composer, Steven Stokes. He sent me an inventory of two of his CDs to sell here on the site's store. When I invited him to join the forum, he said:
Quote:
Thanx for the offer, but I would rather not.

I went through *enough* forums and email lists long ago
and to be honest,I am burnt out on these kinds of things,
and also,I have *enough* to do on the computer each day without
adding anything more to distract me or eat up valuable time.

Maybe I will try it out at some future date, but not anytime soon.

Hope you understand...

I understand him perfectly. I'd like to be able to tell him that an IY topic is like a personal forum, only to discuss his music.

Any thoughts?

I agree that when the banter becomes off-topic (or changes subject), it should move to a new subject heading. This would be very helpful to people who do not have time to read all the posts, but will scan through the subjects to see what is interesting to them.

It might help if there was an easy way to do a quote, but have it appear in a new topic.

The easiest way to do that is to sweep out the text, copy it with the browser (control-c), open a new topid, paste in in the new message, and put quotes around it. Did I say easy? Crying or Very sad

I think this is especially important with regards to the Intro forum, as hijacking people's intro threads is a pretty good way of turning them off to us from the get go. I mean, sure, we have a conversational style to our posts, and I didn't mind letting my intro thread run wild, or taking Elektro's more recent one in fun directions, but that's just us.

There really aren't enough of us on here to where making a mild adjustment to how we post would be a problem.
