Which Sequencer revisited Subject description: Pro Tools M-Powered vs Cubase SE3 or SX3 or |
|
|
I am new to the 'trade' and am undecided as to which sequencer to go for.
It's a toss up between Pro-Tools M-powered or Cubase SE3 or SX3.
Ultimately, I may go for the cheaper option, despite having done my homework I still have some nagging points to clear up.
1. As I understant it Pro tool will only work if its hooked up to the right hardware. Is that also the case after you've recorded and are mixing or editing?
Does Cubase work without this constraint. i.e.: does it stand alone.
2. Given the above does this mean Pro tools is faster than Cubase because of the assistance if getts from the hardware?
3. Which Cubase SE3 or SX3 is the equivalent of Pro tools LE/ M- powered 7?
4. I heard Cubase gives you more bank for ur buck? Is it vastly better than PT or are they very similar in their capability?
Phew thats about all my brain could muster at this stage.
Any help that would help me see the wood from the trees is welcomed and much appreciated.
Thanks Jimbo. |

1.. you can use any pro tools approved m-audio hardware..or digidesign hardware...this is not a bad option, but yes, protools needs that hardware, or it won;t run...cubase can use the built in audio..but this is not the ideal way to operate, fidelity-wise
2. pro tools and cubase are the same as far as cpu usage goes..unless you are using the TDM hardware for pro tools, in which case the hardware does take care of a lot of the DSP..[but i can assume you are not in the market for a $10,000+++ TDM system]
3. SX3 is the equivalent of Pro tools LE/ M- powered 7... roughly, yes, but all software is fairly comprehensive and capable now...
4. 'bang for buck' is subjective...depends on your needs..pro tools is perceived as more 'pro'..which has good sides and bad sides..Sx may be more 'friendly' but i think it cuts some corners...it would be safe to say , no cubase is not vastly better than Pro Tools and it may even be the case that Pro Tools is a tad better...
again it depends on your needs
personally i prefer Logic on OS-X..and Cubase on OS 9 _________________ Spiral Recordings |

Thanks Paul glad you could clear up those points. From what you say I'm leaning more towards Pro Tools because its cheaper than Cubase SX in the UK. I can get M-powered and a M-Audio firewire 1814 for the same price as the SX3 software only.
The only thing that I still find appealing about SX3 is that it will be able to edit etc with out hardware attached to the laptop?

Pro Tools M-Powered comes with an iLok dongle. I don't know if having it connected is enough to open it. (I doubt it). _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube
