How does one control an oscillator (ie, make sound) without a keyboard? In addition, how is self-oscillation relevent in such a process?

you can control an osc via a MIDI sequencer...by transmiting note information etc...or a CV sequencer if this is analog you are referring to...

Light sensitive variable resistors are also cool. Or a theremin. I suppose a lfo could be used in case of emergency. Or you could turn the main power off and on; that will work nicely as well. You could also controll a osc. over OSC; that has several advantages, for one thing it can get confusing if written down, for another you could use a internet connection so you wouldn't need to hear the actual osc. yourself.

Self oscilation doesn't strike me as particularly relevant here but yeah; you could introduce feedback into the controll signals and make them self-oscialte if you realy wanted to. I'm not realy sure what your teacher is getting at there.

Ribbon controller! (similar in effect to a theremin)

Anything that will send a control voltage (CV) can control it... whether it's midi through an interfacte - or audio through some sort of interface (I have an instrument in module on my synthesizers.com module... that will do this...)

The old sample&hold -> slew (lag, etc...) -> osc combo will also get things rolling...
