Softsynths for OS9? |
|
|
I was just wondering if anyone out there knew of any softsynths that would work for Macintosh OS9. It seems that everything today is OSX.....and a lot for Windows XP. What about freeware......were there any rogue programmers presenting free downloadables for Macintosh? _________________ Apple Mac Pro 3.1 2.88 GHz. Intel Xeon Quad

I recommend SoundApp FAT. Although not a synth of any sort- it is invaluable for playing any kind of audio file. It's quite hard to find on the net now- because its developer seems to have dissapeared- but I did find a place to download it here;

Second- Although it's a bit of a headfuck at first- but it really is worth it if you have the time and energy and funnily enough, a lot easier to program than Reaktor (well imo anyway ), Supercollider.
It needs minimum CPU- so if you have a really old PowerPC Mac I will work fine (well anything that runs OS 8.5+ (?- Well I think it's 8.5- it could be just 8! I used to know the exact figure- but it's one of those things that has 'died' in my memory in order to make space for more pressing things hehe!!
It's a good way of learning who code works (but a lot more easier than C+ etc!!)
It was Cylob and Aphex Twin's fave app (amongst hundreds more- including universities etc) for extremely wierd noise whether synthesised or using the Mac as an audio processor

Thanks for the recomendations. I can't use rebirth unfortunately....I don't have reason and rebirth is only available as a refill for registered reason users. bummer. At some point I'll be using reason but I just can't afford it right now. I'll try using that sound app. I guess....writing code isn't really my thing, though.
It's really suprising how there are all these free VSTs for PC users but , well, let's count 'em.....none for Mac users in OS 9! It's really frustrating! _________________ Apple Mac Pro 3.1 2.88 GHz. Intel Xeon Quad

Cellsynth is good.....but it's 'save' disabled, which bites because building up synth cells means creating a patch...and that means you'll need to save them to make your work worthwhile. Plus, the automation sequencer is locked until you pay and get the code to unlock it. I might try using it a little. So still.....I haven't found one free synth.....except Crystal...but I can't run it on my Mac. It doesn't have the CPU speed to run it! Aaaargh! _________________ Apple Mac Pro 3.1 2.88 GHz. Actually it's not 'save' disabled. I was wrong about that and I was able to come up with a really cool patch by taking the tutorial. However the program crashed about 8 times during the whole process.....don't know what to make of that, but it's a cool program that let's you come up with sounds that a standard synth couldn't by re-sampling a patch and then processing it. It gets a little CPU hungry, especially on a 233mhz. G3! _________________ Apple Mac Pro 3.1 2.88 GHz. Intel Xeon Quad

It's not free, and it's technically a soft synth, but if you are stuck on OS9 (or there by choice) I'd recommend picking up a second hand OasysPCI. I've seen them sell for as low as $200-250, and for what you get that's a bargain--it doubles as a pretty nice soundcard. Just remember it won't move to OSX, so you have to keep a running OS9 machine forever.
