ElectrOrganism: Roulette
Recap – Show Review:

So doing a show review when you are on the bill is kinda tricky, to be honest and not overly plug you and your peoples, so I will tell you what I feel is the truth.

It’s 10:00 PM Saturday April 22nd and I am standing on stage at Bert’s Warehouse in Eastern Market: Detroit, MI and we have one more act to sound check before I get to play.

By 10:10 I am playing - Live Keyboards Over Back Tracks, Lights Show – That’s me – Sonic Disturbance. By 10:45 I am done, I shortened my set by 3 songs to get us back on track.

Up next at 10:45 CJ Hahn & Aidan Day of Primed Recordings fire up their computers for a Live PA Techno Set that keeps the energy in the warehouse at full clip. I am loving their set, but I am also tearing down my equipment.

At 11:30 Perfect Summer Take the Stage and dive into their set. They have a great beat and a dreamy sound with One Guy, Two Girls, Drum Machine, Keyboards, Vocals and a Violin Player, but because they have Two Singers and Mic’d Violin there are Feedback problems. If you like Ladytron or the Scissor Sisters you should check out Perfect Summer.

Midnight comes and Craig Gonzalez fires up the turntables for a blistering DJ Set. Craig was spinning a flawless set while I was making my rounds at the bar. People are telling me they love the set-up Live Act-DJ-Live Act-DJ: (You need a stage as big as Bert Warehouse to pull it off.)

1:00 AM and Ghoulie hits the stage. This time up Pat had his grid of Drum Machines and Samplers and was joined by Seth on Guitar. The only way to describe the set was Evil-Electro. Think Evil Nine means Alan Parsons. The set was sick on Haunted Beats and Twisted Melody Lines.

Trent Abbe served up another DJ Set that kept the place thumping. I was thinking to myself that even though the sound check was crazy the night is running smooth from act to act. I mean there was no down time. People Just got up and played and the energy level was not dropping. Live PA and DJ Sets side by side, and if you weren’t watching it was hard to tell the difference. I was glad Trent was brought on, because he flowed right in with no Train wrecks.

Dr. Futurity tore through a Live Set of Drum Machines and Keyboards / Sequencers Synced together by the Two Man Team of Mark & Brandon: Live ACID Lead Lines and Berlin Techno Back Beats. This is what is all about, how the music is being played did not matter, it was not all one or the other, it was everything all in one night.

Last up was Module 8 who dropped a Powerful Set of Minimal through a Bank of Samplers and Drum Machines. My brain kept telling me it was a DJ, because the night went Live Act – DJ – Live Act, but he is Live PA and it sounded as energetic as the DJ Sets. But that is what Roulette is all about, spin the wheel and see what comes up. Everyone I talked to walking around thought the night was tight and seeing so many approaches to the same concept – Techno being presented in so many possible forms.

When it was time to clear the stage, I was amazed we did not miss a beat the whole night.
No major downtime and smooth transitions between acts.
Unfortunately Paulus Hook did not get to Spin, but next time.

Thanks for the review. It's nice to get a feel for what's going on in other places. Detroit seems to be a special place for electro-music. Wish I could have been there.

BTW, it's OK to write a review of a show you participated in. You modestly just mentioned your part. Wink
