That sample was awesome! I love the tape hiss. Now I know why I try to stay out of the digital/analog debate but secretly want everything analog. It's also nice to know my WSG does what it's supposed to do Smile

Hey thanks. Yeh I think I got the hiss when I recorded the Theremin, It's the only thing I used a mike on. I come from the early 90's 4 track hey day so I don't mind the hiss. I was just listening to a bunch of that stuff and was glad I really still liked it alot. "Don't diss the hiss" Cool

I'm glad I now know mine works right to. I used an old A|V box that had some switches in it so I did some "circuit bends" to it.

thanks for the kind words.

Hey all- where have I been? I've missed all this Sad
(oh yes- that bloody neck injury. 6 weeks with virtually no internet allowance Twisted Evil )

Wicked stuff. where do I start?

All work and no play makes Jack a bad boy.

Fonik, the waterproof soundlab is very nice. Do I notice perspex behind the front panel? Is that to light the whole panel/ thing up?

It has a very unique sound, the soundlab- don't you agree?

Indeed. Hiss is very good Very Happy

I have a theory that since digital took the hiss out, my hearing has got a lot worse. Or is that because I'm just getting older?? Shocked

My theory is that when the silent bits kick in between the audio bits, the ear can't adjust so rapidly with the changes, due to the fact that the source is also amplified. The human ear is used to these sudden changes but only in natural unamplified moments.

Who here has ever experienced that post gig ear growl that gets worse when you try to drop off to sleep? Laughing

Also I can listen to a whole load of white noise and them imagine that I'm hearing other music within it.

Analogue rules (and so do earplugs!) Very Happy

Zebra, your track sounds like a camp version of a soundtrack to The Terminator!!! Laughing

nice Cool

tinnitus is so uncool - i have it every time I´m in quiet space. so i like little hiss or white noise 24/7 so it covers the hi pitch-tone ringing. it´s lot easier to sleep in white noise than in ringing-noise.

ear protection rules! (and so does analogue!)

Thanks again dudes. I really have Daniel and Tom to thank for a lot of this stuff. Two top notch guys. Have been a fountain of info and have supplied parts without question. Thanks, hopefully some Ds7's soon!

Hey guys, been awhile...

Coriolis & Fonik...Great tracks!...Not sure if its the character of the machine, but these tracks really have an old feel to them...Fonik: Almost reminds me of oooold kraftwerk...esp with the snare hits.

Here's my latest bit, kind of techno-y. Once again all Soundlab sequenced by a Frostwave Fatcontroller, some verb...n' that's it.

http://www.futurekomp.net/Ferril_Project.mp3

I think my favorite thing is making tuned percussion with the soundlab.

Wow, futurekomp, that's great! How much of that is hardware sequencing, and how much of it is overdubs and cut 'n paste? Either way, it's a wonderful track and yes, the SoundLab has a great and unique sound.

Thx for the input! I used a Frostwave fat controller sequencer and sequenced individual lines...recording each one for about 3 minutes or so. Then in Protools I cut out different chunks or put the new line in....not much cutting and pasting. While recording i did some live tweaking of cuttoffs and release times.

Oh, I did reverse a short sample for the very beginning of the song as well.

Just got a Doepfer midi-cv box so should be able to put more complex melodies and changes in the songs, but I have been getting into using single (odd) instruments for composition lately.

PS...would a low battery be a likely cause for the control voltage for pitch not tracking very well with a midi - cv converter.

Cheers!! Mike

I suppose it could be, but what MIDI -> CV converter is battery powered? Perhaps the Fat Controller? If it can be plugged in as well, try plugging it in and see if that fixes the CV tracking. It's possible, though, that the SoundLab is not tracking well. If you have a voltmeter you can see if you are getting 1V per octave out of your MIDI -> CV converter, though. Just put out some MIDI notes that are octaves apart and see if you get exactly 1V difference between octaves. If your problem persists, start a new thread to ask more questions so this thread can be all about the tunes.

One of the cool things I've noticed about the SL in the tunes presented here, is the way it's often a bit out of tune - and how much I like that it's out of tune! Makes it very...natural sounding?

And yes, it's the bees knees for percussion!

@ Wild Zebra, great noises. What schemas did you use for the theremin? or maybe I should ask v-un-v? I've been trying to find a simple, friendly theremin design. I also find if reassuring to hear a WSG in action as I'm building one in spite of my dyslexic stripboard carving and abandonment by Small Bear.

Thanks, try and ask v-un-v he had boards available waayyy back. But, I'm sure there is a schem too. It doesn't have a volume arial, but it produces very pleasing tones.

Hello,
here is a small piece I put together using my new SoundLab, pictures goming later. I used Korg Mono/Poly´s keyboard and arpeggiator. Recording was made by Samplitude and only a bit af reverb was used on couple of tracks. Intonation was way off, 12 half steps on kboard was 14 actually or so.
Even unevennes on rhythm, "electro-music" and "techno" cliches, are purely intentional. I´m not sure of the name, "Death of Sequencer", "Music for Assembly Lines" or just "Visions of the Past" cound be fine, maybe.

Cool Pehr. Cool Sounds like you got your SEQ working. I got a little handheld digital recorder for x-mas. I wanna make a SEQ patch and run it straight into the recorder and see how it sounds. Hopefully pretty good. It'll make uploading samples a little easier. They have a USB model., but I didn't get that. No worries.

I made this a few days ago, The only soundlab sound in it is the drone, pretty simpley used really, I like it though - you can't do drones very easily on a microkorg! they just dont sound that good really not crumbley enough!
