This is an exploratory announcement.

We are thinking about holding electro-music 2007 in Europe next summer. Greg and I can do a lot of the work as we have been doing for the events in 2005 and 2006 - tickets, CDs, web site, tee-shirts, getting and scheduling the artists, etc. If we do this in Europe, we would need local people to get the venue, arrange for the PA systems, arrange for food (if appropriate), handle insurance, local publicity, etc.

If we use the events in Philadelphia as a model, we would need a venue with capacity for at least 150 people. There should be at least three rooms (venues) for concerts, lectures, demos, and jam session. More rooms would be very helpful for exhibits, vendors, and installations.

The scope of these events is very broad - concerts, jam sessions, lectures, demos, circuit bending, vintage gear - whatever. These are not "shows" but conferences. We ususally hold them for three days and it is best that performers stay for all three days - not show up tp perform and leave.

We already have a couple of uncommitted suggestions, so we are in a position to entertain other possibilities.

If you are interested, please let us know either by PM or by posting here.

Does that mean no EM in Philly? I am sad.

a philly and euro version, all linked up to each other via the web?

Sounds very good. Have you been thinking about where in europe it would be happening? I have some contacts that might be usefull, mostly in northern europe thought.

Well overall it sounds very good although there's no way I could make it. But maybe it would benefit the electro site by letting those on the other side of the pond get involved. Is there a way for a simultaneous event, one in Europe and one in the states......or is that just too Bob Geldofian? Shocked

Well, all is exploritory now, but if we pulled of two events, I'd rather them be at different times so I could make both of them. Wink

Linking events by the web is not all that satisfying, IMHO. Live streaming is cool though. Cool

Have you considered using the method we use to plan these events - an arbitrary and undefined process. Wink

this is very good idea. i will come. i will try to help as much as i can.

i have some venue contacts and technical (sound and light) resources in Finland (Helsinki) - but i guess Finland is too far away even for the European ones of us.

Nah, it's more like "too far out" Wink And Finland is fine as well. AFAIC it doesn't really matter a lot where in Europe it would be.

The biggest issue will be to find a suitable venue, and a volunteer willing to handle the logistics on that end.
Personally I favor doing it again in Cheltenham in the spring, and then in Europe in the fall. I don't want to lose the momentum, great music and friendships that we developed the past two years.

This is exactly how I feel also. The event seems to be gaining momemtum and would a shame to move the event out of the states so soon. Since this is a worldwide community though, I can see why this topic would come up. It would be sort of selfish to think that every electro-music conference could be held exclusively in the US. I believe also that two events each year would be the best solution. One stateside and one in europe, one in the spring and one in the fall respectively. I personally would most likely go to both events since I have been wanting to go on a european holiday.

Another idea would be to alternate between europe and the united states every year. This is similar to what the Audio Engineering Society does with their AES conventions. The event toggles between California and New York each year.

I favor the former choice though.

The momentum is growing indeed...
Before it was held in the US, its predecessors were held four times in The Hague and twice in London.

As a point of reference, Ozone Player (Otso Pakarinen of Finland) goes to the Different Skies event each year in Arizona, USA.

The big question is, how expensive will it be to stay in whatever location is selected. Timing is everything, too. If the peak travel season is selected, then most of the US folks won't be going over. I know this from experience regarding the wonderful Ricochet Gathering event. This year, I was the only one from the US to attend, aside from the organizer, of course.

Yep, and the organizers of those pre-US events are already working hard on the organization for a 2007 early summer event in Europe, in close operation with Howard et al. Expect more detailed announcements in a month or two/three.

....given how many people came this year, but were not able to stay all 3 days, and the small number of people from europe who came this year, i think that the community could support events both in europe and the states....if they alternate spring/fall that might let some people attend both.

I vote for staying at the Cheltenham Art Center for at least another year, but then my reasons are very personal. I live a few minutes away and would not be able to attend if it were held in any other city.

I also feel that the community is beginning to coalesce and moving it now would be a mistake. Rather than using energies to have two events, I think we need to use our collective brains and connections and do better publicity.

Sure, but is it doing so geographically? And if so, where? Is geographical coalescention even a desirerable thing at all?

I'd really love to see EM07 in Europe. I was already hoping for 06, but I understood it was too difficult to move already. I really wish 07 is in Europe (and I can make it).

Please

ahem..... Cheltenham is here in the UK!!!- you yanks just 'copied' the name!!!! LOL!

Actually Cheltenham in Gloucestershire is already home to Ochre records (and another list member here) AND their festival is one of electronic music.

Cheltenham UK and Cheltenham USA simultaneously would be very cool indeed Cool

I agree with you my friend. Would you be willing to compromise and have one stateside in the spring and the other in fall? This way some of us can attempt to go to both affairs. Also, this would simplify internet broadcasting and other logistical matters Very Happy

Seems me we have very smart and responsible people on both sides of the pond to pull an international EM event off and to give Howard, Greg and everyone else a hand.

Well yes I'll have to think about that one as organising these things is another matter!

Anyway- I think me and Stein want to have a festival at Port Merion first Wink
