Say someone has posted an mp3 attachment... on a mac, is it possible to save it onto the hard disk?

Many sites you can do RMC --> Save linked file, but since the link here is to a php page, obviously that doesn't work. Then, after the php redirects to the real file, the mac pops it up into the quicktime plugin and I can't find an option, not even in Firefox, to have it prompt me to open or save the file.

Am I required to buy QT pro just for this?

I would think a better solution would be to provide a link in the attachment table to the real file.

James

No, you don't need to buy QT Pro. On Firefox, you can right click on the link - I think that's control-click on OSX, and select "Save Link As". This will suggest saving the file as download.php, but you can change it to anything you want, including an mp3 file type.

Our server is set up to identify these links as mp3 files with the appropriate MIMEtype so that people can easilly play them with QT, WinAmp, WMP, or whatever program they want.

In addition to what mosc wrote, when you want to to have the QT pro "save as" functionality you could try the quick time alternative, which offers this feature as well.

Any recent version of Safari will accept the attachment link into the download manager. Drag and drop.
An alternative is dragging the URL of the file into the download manager ( when the mp3 file has been opened in a new window.

When dragging a download link like any of the stuff on this page:
http://electro-music.com/mp3media.php ..into the download manager ( command+L will bring up the download manager )

Safari will then gobble a link like this: http://electro-music.com/forum/download.php?id=6321 and figure out which file is returned by the server.. and then download that file.

Oh... very very cool trick!

I guess that's a drawback of drag-n-drop heavy interfaces. Menus and tooltips give the clever user an idea of what's possible, but with d'n'd, it's a shot in the dark.

Thanks!
James
