Hi all-

I recently posted a "Guess the Electronics" game at my blog CatSynth.com

http://www.ptank.com/catsynth/forums.html?entry=entry070109-142012

Basically, listen to the challenge sounds and try to figure out what software, techniques, etc., were used to create it, and whether there are acoustic instruments used as well.

Have fun!

Here are my guesses:

Challenge 1:

The crisp "calimba" attack suggests FM or PD synthesis. On a PD (Casio) synth, one would use the "Ring modulation" function to acheive this. The rapid vibrato suggests an LFO function.

Challenge 2:

This sounds like an random slow noise is modulating the frequency of a clock (an LFO with a pulse wave). The clock, in turn, is triggering an envelope generator and a sample/hold. The sample/hold appears to be sampling a random signal of some kind. The sample/hold's output is being combined with an envelope generator output to control the pitch of a VCO -- also, the envelope generator is controlling a VCA. THe VCO has a sawtooth wave that is being high or band -pass filtered.

Challenge 3:

This sound starts with a bright sound (a rapidly varying pulse wave or perhaps a ring-modulated sound) that passes through a low-pass filter.

The filter's Q is increased until the filter itself starts to "ring" (oscillate). The filter's cutoff frequency is being modulated in a random fashion (perhaps from a sample/hold function).

Challenge 4:

This sounds like a sampled flute or panpipes (it has a lot of chiff). THe second half of the sample sounds as if the chiff part of the sound has been time-stretched.

Challenge 5:

This sounds like samples played back at slooooow speed. The Kurzweil keyboard has some examples wherein sleighbells are played back at a slow speed and produce "creepy" sounds.

This was fun.

Smile
