Yes, I believe they did. I heard it was a chip that the NL3 used went out of production. I've also heard that there will be a new synth from Clavia (not the dual manual thingy rumored for NAMM) sometime this year. |

What do you mean by 'new'?
Yesterday made?
Believe me, most synths are made in one or two runs...
A 'fresh' synth doesn't exist...

From left to the right: Magnus Kjellander, Bjorn Lejander, Bengt Lilja, Hans Nordelius and Rik (van der Brugghen - the only Dutch guy who worked at Clavia). So, all the members of the development team who made the NordLead3. Fredrik Hilvlander singed the manual, which he wrote

The NordLead3 is indeed abandoned, because the chips aren't allowed to be produced anymore, due to the fact they contain lead...

And this forced the producers to discontinue the entire chip line? This is interesting - imagine something like this happening to Intel!

No, they are still produced, but European guide lines forbid using them...
And Clavia is an European company

Which is not entirely true, there are some exemptions ... so maybe we could convince the right authority that in fact the NL3 is life saving equipment, military, or that there is no alternative but to use lead (as in car batteries, and what would be a lead without lead). And I think Clavia would be allowed to produce lead containing products for non eu markets, like the american.
I wonder though what the actual components are they can't get as lead free. Probably not the chips, as most modern stuff is available as ROHS compliant. It could in fact very well be that marketing came up with this as a good excuse to stop production. It would be near impossible to verify this as a consumer, as even vague stuff like shrink wrap tubing has been made with lead in it - you'd have to know the details of the supply chain, manufacturing dates and what not.
But whatever the reason, the battleship sank. _________________ Jan
