USB Mod Subject description: Adding a USB port |
|
|
Hello, Just thought I'd join the list to share a mod I did with my Nord. Since I use the NM1 with my laptop a lot, I wanted to add a USB port and I found one of these cool Neutrik panel mounted ports lying about:
Neutrik NAUSB
I then bought the cheapest USB/MIDI converter which I thought I could get into (no poured cases):
Edirol UM-2EX
The converter came apart with one screw and I removed the MIDI jacks by cutting them apart and desoldering the pins one at a time. I then shortened the USB plug. I butchered some holes in the Nord case with a drill and mounted everything - I mounted the converter so that the power and activity LEDs poke through the Nord's case. This converter has one input and two outputs and so I wired one set through a switch and the remaining output (for my laptop's sequencer) through another. The switches are wired directly to the Nord's MIDI ports and are used to switch out the converter when MIDI cables are used.
This has been a great mod for me. I can use the synth with any computer (with the editor on a flash drive). The project could have been a lot easier by not using the switches (using solely USB), not poking the LEDs through the case, and not shortening the USB cable. The project would have been more complete if a four port converter was used, if the switches totally switched out the MIDI jacks and if the switches also switched the MIDI jacks to the converter only so that the converter could be used without the Nord. Both of those would have required cutting traces on the circuit board and is for a braver soul than I. The only problems I ran into were that the USB plug plugged into the panel jack did not leave enough room for the top to fit on. This was remedied by cutting the strain relief off of the jack. The other problem was that the Editor did not recognize the converter - a quick review of these boards showed that the program should be run in Windows Legacy mode - Whew!
Now to label the switches and LEDs...
