Hey guys, i just joined ive got a couple of quick questions. Ive just been getting into max/msp from a couple of classes earlier this year and recently bought the 9 month deal with jitter which im really excited to get into. Anyways, Im mostly interested in making music and beats etc. so my question is in what way are most of these sounds max/msp can generate compiled into songs? I know that i can get a single cool noise if i play around with a oscillator for example so are they making tons of little noises, exporting them and then putting them together in a song type format on another platform or are they making actually full length songs with beat and structure right out of max? Sorry if this seems kind of confusing..Ive just been listening to alot of music that is described as 'made with max' so im just kind of wondering how they do it/whats the best way i should do it?

Anywhere anyone could point me for information on stuff like this would be awesome also, or if you have made any songs i could take a listen to?

Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Max, specifically, is the collection of control objects by which you create events by which you can either control (via MIDI) discrete sound generation equipment, or VST/AU objects. MSP is the collection of audio generation and processing objects, by which you can work with a signal stream. As you probably already know, Jitter is the video equivalent of MSP.

Anyway, simply put, you control things with Max, you generate sound with MSP. I strongly suggest that you try to go through at least the initial Max tutorials, they are a wealth of information on controlling objects. You will want to understand both control via MIDI and control via internal means (lists, values).

Good luck, if you get stuck and need a gentle push in a particular direction, drop in here. The C74 forum is less forgiving to noobs, I have noted, and one of the biggest problems that musicians have with Max/MSP is to get their heads around the initial concept of the control and signal flow, and the vast number of objects available in the pallette.

Check out all the examples within your max folder and start with creating small basic concepts. Combining smaller patches into a larger whole is an easier approach!

Here's one of my latest patches. It generates 3 minute compositions of an fm synth, drum synthesis and two sample loopers. There's a lot of subpatches, but it's an example of combining small (simple) patches to create a complex whole.

have fun!
