DIY modular DISTORSION Subject description: or Fuzz or Overdrive |

or Fuzz or Overdrive...
or indeed anything that can make you feel a little bit more like a real guitar hero
We've tried here Craig Anderton's AMS-100 VCA VCD
CA3080 is required for U2, the overdrive part.
Guess U1 could be substituted for some better LM13600...
Both prototypes are not satisfying in VCA mode (maybe twice the same minor mistake...)
I imagine it can't be so far from the "mythic" Henry CA3080 VCA, so something "correct" should output from this.

This VCA was scratch-built on Radioshack pad-per-hole board. It's wired almost exactly as shown in The Electronic Drum Cookbook by Thomas Henry, and it's based on the now obsolete CA3080. Thomas explains that this is a no-frills VCA that is probably only suitable for percussion. I found it to work quite well, even for synth sounds, although it thumps a bit with fast CV changes. I think redesigning the CV path and adding a few trimmers would be a good help. Since the 3080 is now obsolete, I'll probably never experiment much further with this design. |

Anyway, I've swapped U3 uA741 for LF355 as stated in partlist.
Then I saw the blue light and/or the magic smoke escaping from this poor latter IC...maybe not just a single "minor error" in fact |

Hey - interesting stuff - I've wanted a modular distortion module for a while so may well try this out.
I hadn't heard about Device before -- there's some really useful stuff (theory etc) within it and some damn fine Craig Anderton designs. And its a nice view of how things were spread before the internet (write to us for further info!)

it would be very interesting to hear what it sounds like, often simple distortion units the sound looses much of the bottom end.... |
