Hello seraph,

I thought that you might be interested in this.

Some of your readers are familiar with Hermode Tuning (called Pure Tuning on the Access Virus synths), which retunes the pitch of notes to align with the partials of the Harmonic Series.

Bill Sethares (of the University of Wisconsin) has recently implemented a new approach to the alignment of tuning & partials: Dynamic Tuning & Timbres (DT&T). This new approach approaches the problem from the other direction. It dynamically re-positions the partials in any given timbre to align with the current tuning. This allows the tuning to change on the fly, with the structure of the sound being adjusted to match.

For example, instead of retuning the pitches of notes away from 12-tone equal temperament (12-tet) to match Just Intonation (and thereby align with the partials of the Harmonic Series), DT&T leaves the pitches of the notes alone and adjusts the locations of the harmonics to align with the notes. This is how the Hammond B3 organ worked, BTW.

This allows a performer to change tuning on the fly, and have the timbre adapt to the new tuning. This ability enables new musical effects, such as real-time polyphonic tuning bends, temperament modulations, and even entirely new chord progressions, all within the time-honored framework of tonal harmony.

An extremely preliminary, buggy, and experimental implementation of Dynamic Tuning & Timbres, with test-quality timbres, can be explored by following the instructions at http://www.thummer.com/blog/2007/06/online-thummer-dynamic-tuning.html. An artcile describing the technical details has been accepted for publication in the late 2007 edition of MIT Press' Computer Music Journal.
