Subject description: electro-music is leaking email addresses
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hey,
I just received spam email starting with "Hey mi_dach". As electro-music is the only place I use that username, it's pretty obvious where the spammers picked up my email address. The mail appeared to come from flikr.com so it's not someone pressing the Email button on my profile.

Having been on this forum for some time now, I don't think electro-music is the type of place to sell my address to someone else, but who knows? Is it possible your database is insecure and spammers have managed to steal the addresses??

Thanks for telling, it's something for Howard to look into, if possible at all.

Spammers seem to get smarter by the day, at my work people are telling me the same thing, they get spam on user accounts that they didn't make public and only use for certain restricted purposes, and it's a mystery to me.

I am receiving spam send to me by myself!!!
I see my own name as sender and the content of the mail is pure spam.
Sometimes just mail mail address as sender...

Wow, there's something strange with your mail address, Jan!
Do I read it well and is it *.*****@***.**?

I dunno... we sure aren´t selling email addies. Shocked We are pretty nuts about privacy issues so that will never happen.

I don´t think there is a db leak, but who knows? Shocked

Don't underestimate the scripts out there. on my forum I've had to do a lot to secure both the memberlist and the forums from some fairly intelligent scripts. They register just to phish through the memberlists, as well as posting spam. This is a phpBB forum like mine, they get most of the scripts although I hear Invision gets hit a lot too.

But some people make it too easy, posting their emails in plain text. I wouldn't do that anywhere any more. Too many spiders out there.

Watch out for XRumer.

Didn't say yours did - I think there's a script which is trolling through the profiles. But people here do leave plaintext names and I wouldn't suggest it.

I'm sure Howard will sort it out. I personally am not that bothered as I already lost my mail addresses, all of the current ones, to spammers, for various reasons. I use SpamAssassin on my server, and it does a nice job of filtering out spam. Of course mine is set to kill, so a lot of people get caught in the trap so I need to check the "probably-spam" trap frequently. But whitelisting is easy after that.

All of which has nothing to do with the state of these forums. My educated guess is a trolling through by some not-very-nice spider.

Didn't think my email address was available on my profile page either.

I checked your profile and if one is a guest or registered member they can't see your email address. Admins can see it though.

We definitely have never given away or sold email lists of our members, nor have we ever sent out a mass mailing to members.

I searched this forum and couldn't find anywhere your email address is posted.

Not much else I can think of but I will check the phpbb boards and see if there is anything about this there. Thanks for the heads up.

But not editors/moderators, which means only mosc and elektro80 are able to see email addresses.
