Demise of ElectronicScene |
|
|
Unless something incredible happens, ElectronicScene will be gone in 30 days or so . Hard to believe. This was probably the best site on the web dedicated exclusively to electronic music. All flavors. And the reason it's going away? It was too popular! 220,000 downloads/month. Lots of people actually enthusiastically listening to electronic music - and plenty of them going for the 'experimental' genres too.
Gideon, the site owner/administrator, needed $5g's to keep going in order to purchase new server hardware, etc. But nobody seemed interested in that big of an investment - especially to give away music.
Indeed, some of the artists seemed more than a little disgruntled by the fact that the big slug of monthly downloads would probably dry up if people had to actually pay for electronic music. Annoyed by the fact that the artist was paying out of pocket to give the music away - which is a bizarre reality.
Still it was killer music that was reaching an amazing number of people on an ongoing - and growing - basis.
Moot point now. It's a major blow to artists and listners alike to loose a site like ES, but for me, being of the 'art is a labor of love' school of thought, I find it cynically ironic that success is what killed it. Another triumph of market economy! _________________ Que la musique sonne - Edgard Varese

I have an account over there. I did not know anything about it. You are right: another triumph of market economy!

Was a member since the early days... and was my main OMD. I've spent most of today moving my files to NetNewMusic where i have a few hundred MB.
I think its demise was as much a factor of Gideon, seeing a train coming down the tunnel and believing that somehow his relatively modest business skills could keep it from destroying the site, the train being the flood of listeners left without a source for legal free music with MP3.COM dead. One man band shops are few and far between these days and Gideon did a fantastic job while he was able.
I wouldn't be surprised to see it rise from the dead, but I'm afraid of how long it would last at that point without a massive influx of $$$. _________________ music

OMD stands for Orchestral Manoeuvres (in the) Dark
just kidding
An effort like ElectronicScene can not survive for long on a voluntaristic base. Gideon did great but maybe he did not have the vision of how it could grow beyond his own expectations. _________________ homepage - blog - forum - youtube
