I´m pretty sure I´ll keep my previous generation Mac Pro. It works great and I stuffed it with 16 gigs of RAM and 3 UAD-1 DSP cards. The new model uses another sort of RAM and there is an incompatibility with the UAD-1 PCIe cards ( although that bit will supposedly be sorted out soon ).

Sounds like a sweet machine.

Our band uses a Windows box + Mbox/Pro Tools as the main recording machine, because my bandmate (the main songwriter) is most comfortable with Pro Tools. I still use my old iBook + MOTU 828MkII/AudioDesk for my own stuff, which is hard for her to use.

That Windows box is unstable due to poor maintenance by its previous owner. I'll probably get a new iMac to replace it as the recording machine in my basement music room (which she wants to also use as her bedroom). And get a Macbook (regular) for recording in my own bedroom.

I got one of the 8-core jobbies recently and I can confirm, it is, in technical terms, bloody bastard fast.

However...

Moving from my well-loved dual G5 Power Mac to the new beast threw up the usual coughs and stutters. And I had to buy a MOTU PCI-424e card as, of course, the PCI-424x card doesn't fit.

So look out for hidden upgrade costs.

So far, I've been lucky with my software and it's all been okay (one reason I left it so long since I got the G5, I wanted to make sure everything I use was available in Intel versions).

I'm pleased that I can now record at 96KHz/24bit and, to my ears, it does sound a bit more zingy. But I could be imagining that to justify the expense. Very Happy

I can recommend the new iMac. I bought one for my Dad for his birthday and it's a lovely bit of kit. Very quiet too! The screen is gorgeous.

I'd be tempted to move to one if I didn't need the PCIness for my MOTU interfaces.

Jyoti, what ever happened to the Tascam 688, C60 tape and Tandy PZM philosophy?? I'm really tempted just to get that Logic Pro upgrade (still on Logic pro 6 here), but last year I bought a Yamaha MD8 for £80. A lovely machine!

The only thing that gets me about the new iMac's are the glossy screens. Evil or Very Mad

But yes, I do like the specs of the new iMac- especially the 24". The NVidia 512mb card is really tempting (my work is graphics and CAD). This Macbook Pro's ATI card is just a tad underpowered. The rest of the computer rocks!!

I´ve almost figured out the Korg D3200. It seems to be a nice piece of kit. I´m sure the wife will allow me to use it for some stuff now and then. Laughing
To me, the thing with DAWs like Logic is that they are more suited to the way I really work and you can even cut and splice the "tape" Shocked Laughing

Oh, I still use the PZM, don't worry. I even managed to track down another for stereo! Smile

I've still got my 688 but I haven't used it in years. If I used it now, it wouldn't be the same as I would be going willfully lo-fi. Back then, it was as hi-fi as I could afford!

So, my philosophy really hasn't changed - I've always been a gearhound and hi-fi. Just didn't have the money for it! Smile

Quote:

I still don't quite trust Logic's shonky sequencer timing, it's rubbish compared to anything from Elektron. It's fine for audio though - I use it as a large virtual tape-deck, don't even use the softsynths that much.

I'm going to sound super-wanky saying this but I record on different bits of kit depending how I feel. Sometimes I'll do something in Logic if I'm in a mousing and squinting mood, sometimes on my DPS24 mk2 (awesomely quick machine, like a digital 688), sometimes my Zoom H2. Whatever suits the piece and gets in the way the least.

I had an MD8 for a while, back in 1999 - great machine! Can you still track down the data MDs okay?

About the Logic Studio upgrade - I went for it as I still use it as a tape recorder. And, in a way it's my 688 of digital recording...

Let me explain:

Using my Mac Pro and Logic and the three 24 I/O interfaces, I have 72 ins and outs. This means I can have all my gear recordable without using a patchbay (including individual outs from my 808) and I can patch in all my outboard too.

If I wanted a digital desk that did the same....

Well, I'm not informed enough - how much would a 72 input / output SSL or similar cost?

So, as bizarre as it may sound, this is my budget system! Laughing

Yes it's still possible to get MD DataDiscs believe it or not!

My first LP was entirely done with lots of four-track tapes, assembled together on a Tascam 16 track that belonged to my girlfriend (now sort of wife- not married, but we've been together for years!). It sold the most in the States- where they are in to that spacey feedback guitar drone shit Cool

I haven't done any music in ages. I've gotta do some more soon. Idea

I almost got one of those but went for the DPS24 mk2 instead (after flirting with a naughty AW2400).

Is it quick and easy? There's still nothing as seamless as a good hardware recorder.

They seduce you stealthily. Then you go back to tape or a hardware recorder and you find yourself missing them. The devils!

I too find the sequencer in Logic totally awful. I've always found it akin to "hard metal funk"- if you like that thing. Cubase had a far better feel, it's just a shame Cubase is so awful in the way it looks and works (the Atari version was so much better. Poor Atari. R.I.P. Sad )

If I had the money, I'd have an MPC-3000. But I've got a great little Electribe EM-1 instead (its a toy- but it's lots of fun!)

Logic as a 'tape machine' though, is amazing! I love the plug ins too.

Well, you have to find your audience, innit? That's why I end up gigging in Scandinavia these days as they seem to like camp goth synth indiepop. Smile

That's bad, man. I tend to go more nuts if I can't do music. My studio's a fucking tip at the mo (mid-rewire) and it's doing my head in... Sad

You'll get no argument from me about the varying feel of different sequencers.

If you want the long, boring version, it's here. Razz

My argument comes from using a Palm Zire 72s loaded with a copy of Bhajis Loops software on it. BL's has a feel, only something like the MPC, or early Cubase had. I've never heard that sound or feel on any other modern DAW.

check it out (only £13 too!!)

Well it might as well be! Laughing

Very hard to describe. Technically the timing is 'perfect' in Logic, but there is something about this perfection that which leaves me feeling cold. Only a few other sequencers have "that" sound, "that" feel. It's really hard to explain Shocked
