Go for the soundcard. It's a lot less money and because Soundblasters are so standard it has less chance of giving you trouble in the future. Oh, and you get a free soundcard with it, I guess the issue is that your current card is a build-in one? _________________ Kassen |

anyway
The NM is pretty picky on the MIDI interface, so I'd buy an interface that's MIDI only ... if you only want to edit the NM and not send midi to it from the computer you could use such an interface as you listed, but $125 seems expensive to me for such a device.
In the past I've been using a midiman 2x2 and currently I use an edirol um-3ex - I found both to be working OK with the NM under windows XP sp2. I had nothing but bad experiences with a MIDI port on sound cards re. the NM.
I saw there is an edirol um-1ex as well which seems to be going for $40 to $45. http://musical-instruments.pricegrabber.com/recording-accessories/m/14568163/ _________________ Jan

Limited, but yes
The knobs and the button can be made to send MIDI CC messages. _________________ Jan

Just in case ... beware that you need a double MIDI interface when you want to be able to both edit your patch and send out MIDI CCs to the PC at the same time ... editing is over the MM's PC port and MIDI data goes over it's other MIDI port ... _________________ Jan

you need 2 midi cables. One(pc out) goes into into the midi in,
and one(pc in) goes to the midi out port. That should do the job.
And maybe one to send midi cc's out (like Jan wrote). That one goes from your midi out to your midi in to other gear you have.
And watch out for police, if you're shopping like that. |
