hey lately on some of my samples, particularly dronies,i've been playing around more and more with eq levels to give them a dustier sound, which is
what i want

is it wise to be using eq as an effect or is it going to come back and bite me?

You'll be fine. EQ is no worse or better then other filtering (which it is). Of course it can bite you in some cases but this usage is perfectly normal and fine.

Using the term "effect" has become a little fuzzy in the course of time.
It often is related to things like distortion, reverb, flanging, etc. With maybe a negative imago of a 'cheap trick'.

I think, strictly spoken, that any modulation of some original sound-source can be seen as 'applying an effect'.

So also an equalizer. Nothing wrong with bending your material the way you want it to be.

I use samples a lot in my work too, and I always will consider them as "raw material".

As with many things; it only sounds cheap if you consciously notice it :¬)
