DP6 Subject description: Eventually I'll even review it |

Got my upgrade to DP6 today. If I hadn't been out of the studio almost all summer, I might have done the upgrade earlier.
In any case, firing it up with a known project, it looks better than it did in DP5. I'll have something to do for a while _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

I will be shifting my home setup to intel later this year and will upgrade both max/msp and digital performer at the same time.
I will be upgrading from 4.6, so the difference will be huge. Please post some of the things you ran into. _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

yeah I've been posting my experiences into a text edit file, I'll post that when I get some substantial observations. I recently just went through the Tiger/Max5/DP6 upgrade path and it's a lot for my brain to deal with.
One thing that rocks is Spaces, though, using Spaces with multiple screen hogging applications is wonderful, just like I've been doing it on Linux for ages. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

I'm fairly impressed with it. Do post your impressions as well. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.

I am close to finish my first big project on my new setup, dp6.01 on a macbook pro.
The experience is great. I noticed an enormous increase in editing speed, a lot of that has to do with a large increase of cpu power and faster memory compared to my powerbook.
But the first part will be on digital performer. I am recording and mixing a 4 song demo for a modern melodic punkrock band. I recorded everything on location using various interfaces and had no issues at all.
I upgraded from 4.6, so a lot of things are new, but I am very happy to notice that all the plugins, routines and qualities i learned to love in 4.6 are still here. The masterworks eq must be my most used plugin in this project and I haven't noticed any trouble cpu wise whilst loading a great number of them into projects.
I have ONE problem and I want to get it out of the way, when making a memoryloop and hitting play, dp hangs for several seconds. It is the only time it does it and I still haven't figured out what combination of actions triggers this behaviour, but switching windows before hitting play seems to work just fine. Strange and hopefully a future bug fix, or me reading more manual!
Back to the good stuff... Proverb, wow. Amazing reverb, works similair to altiverb, but has a much easier interface and loading your own impulses is as easy as it gets, just drag and drop. I am collecting some nice impulses and will post some links soon.
In altiverb it takes a lot of patience and getting to know the supplied software to make your own impulses. I feels great to be able to do that at home now, with ease.
The sound quality of the factory impulses is great and I have only used a few so far. I will be diving into this plugin as soon as I have some more spare time. Maybe we could exchange impulse libraries?
The looks.. I had to get used to it and I really think things are getting a bit too small for my eyes. It has to do with the resolution of my mbp screen as well and my very bad eyes and even worse glasses. Sometimes i really have to pinch my eyes to read values, while, for example, inserting automation values. Otherwise the look is calm, simple and nothing seems to bother me.
The drum editor has some changes, but I haven't worked with it enough to notice them! Soon I will, because I now have..
..the mode l12, I think dp5 had it already, but it's a first for me. I like having it and hopefully it can increase my productivity, but I love working my akai sampler. A lot of extra works, but it's like meditation and it helps me focus my ears. Maybe in the future... something I thought years back about polar and I still haven't used polar!? So maybe a few toys are left in the closet, but the instrument package looks and sounds very good and has some potential for my music. We'll see..
Have I mentioned power? I am running a lot of tracks and I do not have to bounce anything anyore.. am I spoiled or was I just behind on things. My max patches are more than halfed in cpu power and I am loving every moment of it.
This rambling was what sprung to mind after these first number of weeks working with both a new generation laptop and a giant leap in digital performer. I will post more indepth stuff as soon as I start using dp for producing my own material! _________________ http://husc-sound.com |

I've been using DP6 for small projects and I've definitely noticed that the CPU usage is much more efficient, especially using AUs. I did a bunch of audio only work for someone a few weeks ago and it needed a lot of EQ, reverb and compression (ideally I'd have wanted the drum tracks done more cleanly but that wasn't going to happen). Anyway with about 8 tracks using individual EQ plugins and 4 limiters and 3 different reverb settings, the CPU meter didn't even show any load. This is with a Mac Pro 4 core tower, but I do think overall they seem to have fixed some of the performance issues.
I think the display is more efficient too. Certainly the workflow has cleaned up - I really like the "windows" menu, which gives you preset window sets for particular workflow tasks. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.
