i'm trying to understand this keyboard schematic but don't quite know where is the GATE out put...

There isn't a separate out for pitch and gate on the schematic. If you -really- need a separate trigger signal you're going to have to split the output and buffer half of it (easy if you know what you're doing, a lot of trial and error if you're like me). Simple resistor chain/switch matrix input devices work pretty o.k., I've built two similar to this one (one for my 555 synth and one for my 358 synth). How precise the pitch you get as a result of feeding it to your oscillator depends on how precise your resistors are and how stable the power supply going to it is.
