Thsi might be of interest to folks here. Microchip will be selling a development kit to exploit the capabilities of theor AR1000 Touch Controller IC's. This looks very interesting for some nice X/Y based touch controllers for musical applications.

The kits are $99.00 and will be available in May. I think I may get one of these just to play aorund ...

Any thoughts, comments, etc ...

Any idea if it's multi-touch and/or Z axis capable?

The AR1000 series resistive touch controller data stream only has X and Y data with 10 bits of resolution in each of the two axis. Each serial data packet contains X lo, X hi, Y lo, Y hi, and PEN Up/DN data. The chip does not support multitouch so it might be limited in your application.

You can get chips that will communicate in any one of three serial formats: I2C, SPI, or standard NRZ asynchronous serial (UART)
