Though it is difficult reading, Heinrich Schenker gets into the notion of "prolongation" which, among other things, defers cadences.

Actually I think Schenker makes for difficult reading because of his inadequate formalisms. This has been corrected in A Generative Theory of Tonal Music by Fred Lerdahl, Ray Jackendoff. It is now considered the seminal work in the field (semi) formal musical analysis.

This book is now available online here. When it first came out I gave a copy to most of the people I new who were serious about music -- including Howard Laughing

Zylaphon includes the formal abstractions to support this form of analysis. The first graphic on this page structurally models the generative (Schenkerian) form of harmonic analysis.
Edit:
who not how

Despite my enthusiasm for generative theories I think of them as promising pattern generators rather than the expression of innate musical intuitions. This should be a caution to those who see generative theories as "The Truth":

Zylaphon is agnostic, or perhaps polytheistic, when it comes to music theories--it wants to support them all.
