It seems that there are several decent display options, so this does not have to be too bad all things considered.

BTW, I´m expecting that the "new" hype of flash ram /SSD storage means that 10.7 comes with some sort of documentation regarding trim and such

Currently there is a kind of controversy regarding how well SSDs actually work with OS X. Or.. more like a WTF situation..

I'm waiting for SSD's to come down in price and up in storage per drive. These should scream for audio production. Until then, more SSDD.

What's wrong with rehashing old ideas?

Most of the time that's the only way I get a project completed! Laughing

It only figures that after being the only guy on the planet still running Tiger for 3 years or so that as soon as I upped to Snow Leopard it'd be obsolete. Rolling Eyes

I'm still on Tiger. Wink I'm constantly thinking about upgrading by buying a new iMac, but I keep postponing it, so it'll probably be when this computer breaks down or I'm no long able to run the latest version of Live.

When your computer breaks down, if you're on a budget, you can put together, at minimum, a decent system - especially if you build it yourself - for not too much money, and build a Hackintosh and see how it works with Lion.

I spent all my money on my new system on hardware alone and it runs Linux. This gives me the best possible hardware for my budget (the best in my opinion, anyway), and I don't have to spend money on software I consider less-than.

In your case, you would have to buy the OS and other software, but you could save a bundle on the hardware, as Apple's proprietary hardware co$t$ a bit.

All good points. I have a Linux installation on another laptop, and I'm having good fun with it.

However, for my main home working environment (which I am shocked to realise that my MacBook Pro has now become), the it-just-works factor of an Apple product makes it my choice of platform, once I decide I can afford it. It's luxury, and I'm lazy, and slightly ashamed because of it. I just can't stand the terror of OS configuration (I was halfway to dumping the idea of trying audio on Linux when it magically started working, for no obvious reason). But I'm happy the alternative exists.

/Stefan

See me next time you try this. If you use Gentoo, I have a document specifically for that. If it's Ubuntu, it should just work. Other distros probably would follow what I wrote for Gentoo.

It CAN be easy. You just have to follow a few steps and keep your head screwed on.

Shit, what am I saying? *I* can't keep my head screwed on! Laughing

Shocked

Stefan! Shocked

Tiger is really bad. And it's really slow too. You'll be well advised to leave Snow Leopard alone, but update to Leopard (and getting all the updates too), because Leopard is really very good. And it's fast. Much faster than Tiger! Very Happy

Hmm, I do find my Mac annoyingly sluggish at times. But can you still get Leopard now that there are newer versions? I tried looking at Apple's store site and I can only find Snow Leopard. What's bad about Snow Leopard, by the way?

Well, I have a working Ubuntu Studio installation now, and I'm not touching it lest it crumble in my hands. Wink

Installing (in my case) Ubuntu in itself isn't usually tricky. It's getting stuff like my Fasttrack Pro up and running, and - since I'm fiddling with Fluxus - OpenGL hardware support running. Then there's the case of installing something that either isn't support by apt-get, that requires some other software that seems to be there, but in the wrong version or universe or something. And then there's... I'll stop. I can go there on days I feel I have the energy, but I loathe every single second of it. It's just a big pile of no fun, and I have enough of that at my dayjob.

eBay?

Leopard seemed to work better on older Intel machines, and, unlike S. Leopard, Leopard works on PPC machines too.

I heard that Leopard is a hog and Snow Leopard is way more efficient.I don't have any direct experience though having leapfrogged over leopard.

That's nonsense. Who told you that load of hogwash?

SL is more efficient if the computer you have just purchased was purchased with SL installed. FWIW, Macs won't run an OS that is older than the one supplied and pre-installed. I've found SL a lot more buggy than Leopard too.

Well.. SL was the next step in order to clean up the APIs and core.. and nail the foundations of the OS X 64 -bit enviroment.

Providing that one also had a graphic card that was able to take advantage of all that GPU stuff- but to be honest, I think the eventual release of SL was a bit of an anti-climax (apart from that nice price of course), and somewhat overshadowed by the release of the iPhone.

Apple are really good at marketing! Wink

But they still make very good products. Wink Very Happy

The GPU stuff was just a minor part of what 10.6 blinked into existence.

Anyways, I installed some SSD drives in one of my fairly high volume mail servers. Pretty amazing. I´ll buy some for my DAW when I can get 512 gig units for "slightly" less than they go for now.

I'm waiting for the price to come down, too. They'll make awesome drives for audio.

EDIT:

HOLY FUCKING....!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227517

I will definitely wait as long as necessary in order to be able to buy an SSD for what a 1 TB magnetic drive costs now. Four thousand fuckin' dollars?!? Eat me!

The trick is to use the SSDs for the important tasks that require speed, and use the traditional spinning platters for the stuff that doesn´t require fast access.
