Thanks for the advice. I have good news, I got the smoke back in! Smile So yeah, I would have suspected a transistor and, in fact, I was about to go through and replace them all, but I decided to do a little investigation with a multimeter first. I was checking out one of the IC's and noticed the power pin wasn't connected anymore. Went all the way back to the power entry and found out it was the 10 ohm resistor at the circuit entry that blew (and yeah, there were some minor external signs). Is the circuit designed to fail that way on reverse polarity. I don't understand why that would be the fail point. Super lucky break. I replaced that resistor and everything seems to be working perfect again. I wonder if the original IC's are even damaged... will have to test those later. For now, I'm a happy camper. Seriously thought I'd be starting from scratch.

On a related note, can anyone link me to a good way to do polarity protection? Now that I think of it, it seems insane to do DIY modules and not put in polarity protection given how much plugging and unplugging happens.

Good. Those 10ohm resistors are designed to do just that. And I consider it a plus that they send a smoke signal when polarity is reversed. Laughing

Well, i don't know what kind of power connector you are using, but I always thought that the keyed dotcom 5 pins connector it's an excellent way to prevent polarity inversions. Well worth the little extra hassle of sourcing the parts and/or wiring a power harness (if you make yours, like I do).

One trick from guitar pedals is to use a 1N5819 (or 1N5817, I forget which, check your datasheets) in line with the +9V power input. RG Keen did a fancier power protection scheme, it's on Geofex somewhere.
