Possible Worlds
recent xenharmonic explorations

Xenharmonic is a term coined by Ivor Darreg used to describe tuning systems, or music using those systems, which does not conform to or closely approximate the common 12-tone equal temperament.

This compilation does not attempt to cover the full range of xenharmonic work currently being produced; rather it is a snapshot, one that nevertheless presents a wide range of musical aesthetics and xenharmonic practice. Xenharmonic music has long been a presence in the west, but a relatively muted one since the widespread adoption of ultra-flexible 12-TET (microtonal inflections aside). Even with well-known artists sometimes at the helm, music substantially outside of 12-TET has remained a kind of sideshow. With computer technology and accelerated information flow driving research and experimentation, it seems that xenharmonic music may be poised to raise its profile. In any event, it remains a vast area ripe for continued exploration, one that deserves attention. With this small compilation we hope to capture some of the excitement and unique beauty in recent xenharmonic music.
