Hi All
I've just returned to building the soundlab after being distracted for a few months. The board has been finished for a while but I've been holding off to find an appropriate case. Well, I found a great test equipment style chassis (w/fold out wire stand) and so I'm back.

I've noticed the new sample and hold mod and would love to include it, but since I have somewhat limited front panel space, I might have to eliminate the fine tuner mods for the oscillators. How much space does the s&h mod take in terms of panel space? If its just a pot and a switch or two it shouldn't be a problem.

Also, how helpful is it to have the fine tuners? Could I use ten-turn pots on the freq. pots instead or would that be too cumbersome?

thanks so much.

Hi everybody,

this is my first post Very Happy

I just wanted to say this is an interesting question.
I wonder if a ten turns pot could really replace the fine tuning mod.
Bye...

I don’t know this specific project but I think a 10 turn pot for frequency control would be a pain to operate. A vernier dial as on the EMS synths would be good but take almost as much room as two smaller knobs. Some have a sort of auto gearing so that slow movement is in the 10 or 15 turn ratio but fast movement is in the 1:1 ratio. They are also quite expensive NZ$50-100 each. I would suggest finding a dual concentric pot as used on some car stereos so the fine tune is on the outer ring, might have to try the electronic surplus stores. Not sure about the linear/log thing, maybe log would be good for fine tuning?
Failing that, maybe a 3 or more position mini slide or toggle switch for range combined with a +- 1 Octave tune pot. And finally, consider mixing rotary and slider pots, sliders can take less room but cutting the panel holes is difficult.
These are just suggestions, I have never built my own synthesiser, always wanted to though.

IMO This is a good place for a dual concentric pot. Small Bear has them.
