Hi Electro-music peoples
My name is jeff7b9 and I write Trance. I am basically a lifelong musician.
As kid I had played a bit of piano, guitar and trombone (school band). I got away from playing music in high school to focus on sports and girls, but got back into music in college, starting with messing with guitar again while smoking weed, then taking music classes in school (eventually finishing with a music degree.... 12 years and 4 colleges later).
During college at around 21 years old I started DJing and writing EDM in ProTools. I was working at "Sam Ash" which is a music store similar to Guitar Center or whatever your local Guitar/Drum/Keys/Pro Audio/Etc store. I was working in keyboards and hanging out with the manager of the Dj Department and he said he needed someone to open for him at Limelight (an amazing NYC club which if you haven't heard of, look it up- it was inside a cathedral in Manhatten and a fairly famous club) ... With no idea what I was doing whatsoever I said "Yeah man, I'll do it!" The gig was about a month away, I had a set of Pioneer CDJ500s which I had barely even used. I promoted the gig like crazy, got about 120 people down and along with my roommate figured out how to DJ by the seat of my pants.... It turned into a weekly gig and within a few months I was spinning Limelight every Thurs, Tunnel on Friday and occasional other gigs at Exit and a couple raves.
After 2-3 years of hardcore commitment to writing EDM (writing 40-50 songs in that time), during which time I would also play guitar and bass for 2-3 hours, drums for 1-2 hours a day and I was studying jazz piano in a small school in Long Island called Five Towns College. Then I started playing in bands and then spent ages 23-36 as a gigging keyboard player.
Over the years I played all sorts of different styles, plenty of rock and blues, funk, reggae, pop, an 80's band, a little country, a few singer/songwriters.
Jam Band style music was my favorite to play (I am Phish fan) as I love to improvise and be able to experiment, I also loved playing live synth since I have the background in EDM (and I feel like most live keyboardists don't take advantage of synths enough).
In my 20's I was a full time musician in LA, often playing in 4-5 bands at the same time as well as playing church gigs on sunday and I had a day gig as a producer/engineer in a studio. (great gig because not only did I get to produce music and engineer all day and get paid for it but I got to play on most of the recordings since just about everything can benefit from a touch of keyboards, synth or strings and lot of our clients wanted production help, drum programming, etc to make their recordings sound better)
Along the way I got married and had 2 kids and for now I am taking a break from the late night bar gigs and getting back into producing.
I wrote about 25 songs this year, 9 of which are going to be on an album that I hope to get released on a label. The dream would be to get signed to a label that truly believes in the music I make and will help get my music out for people to listen to.
That's my story.
