New synth: MOTU MX4 |
The virtual instrument features a hybrid synthesis engine that combines subtractive, wavetable, FM, and analogue-emulation techniques. MOTU say the inspiration for MX4 came from classic subtractive synths like the Prophet 5, PPG Wave and Moog Modular, so we can expect a fair number of vintage synth presets, but the plug-in’s flexible modulation architecture and range of synthesis methods suggest potential that goes beyond mere emulation.
MX4’s three oscillators are equipped with all the usual analogue synth waveforms, but with the option of modulating the waveform’s symmetry. This can be used to create pulse-width modulation and cross-waveform morphing effects. Each of the three oscillators can use a wavetable instead of a waveform, and users can create their own wavetables. Oscillators one and two can be sync’ed together to produce hard sync effects, while oscillator three is used as an FM source for the other oscillators or the filters. The oscillator section also features an independent fundamental-tone oscillator and a ring modulator.
The filter section offers two multi-mode filters (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and notch), switchable between 6, 12, 18 and 24dB-per-octave slopes, and the two filters can be stacked together to form a single 48dB-per-octave filter. Four variable LFOs, each with its own ADSHR envelope and adjustable symmetry, rate delay, fade and phase, are linked to a flexible modulation matrix. All ofMX4’s continuously variable parameters can be modulated by many sources, including track automation, MIDI controllers, LFOs and envelopes, and by multiple sources simultaneously. Conversely, each modulation source in MX4 can modulate an unlimited number of destinations simultaneously, with the modulation range independently scaled at each destination.
