I am building the Penfold synth and I am sourcing the parts for the noise generator, which calls for a Z5J noise diode.

It seems to me this is now obsolete - Does anyone know of a modern replacement?

many thanks

I think that was just an axial 5.1V zener diode. So, something like a 1N751? If you are breadboarding you could try a few different 5.1V zeners and audition them to find the... noisiest?

Or use a general purpose NPN transistor where the Emitter is connected where the Cathode of the diode is projected and the Base of the transistor where the Anode of the diode supposed to be.

That's very helpful - thanks both for your input. Have either of you built the Penfold Synth previously?
