My understanding was that the "pointing north" was just because they watched the stars and understood that they always rotated around a given point. Now, which star is the "north star" actually changes over time. Who knows when it was built, but it would always point to the same spot. Polaris itself, will only the the north star for a given period. Now, it is also my understanding that "star drift" takes millions of years, so I believe the position of the north star 10,000 years ago and 3,000 years ago and today for that matter, would all be about the same distance away from the actual rotation point.

I also found the "light years" reference hard to swallow. Knowing the speed of light is a very recent thing. So is calculating the distance to stars.

and a straight-line visual guide to the north star (well, where it was 3,000 years ago

The movement of the North Star is not due to the drift of the star, but to the precession of the Earth's axis. The Earth wobbles like a top. The period is 26000 years.

ah, I didn't realize our wobble was that wide. I also thought it had a much shorter period than 26,000 years

seems like that would mean you'd have a very easy way to date the pyramids fairly exactly
