Hello, I was experimenting with the eight way delay line, trying to develop some extreme delay feedback effects like the GRM Tools comb filters.

I made this patch - just a simple synth going into a delay line with feedback.

I found that if the feedback is up high, and you energetically tweak the delay time, the audio cuts out completely for a second or two, only recovering when you've turned the feedback right down.

Is this a feature, or a bug, or some function of phase cancellation in the feedback?

It's a shame there's so much zipper noise on the delay lines when changing times, isn't it? Does anyone know if this is something that an OS upgrade could fix in future, or are we stuck with it?

Thanks!

ps: PLEASE WATCH YOUR EARS - GETS VERY LOUD

Nasty test of feedback in an 8-way delay line, which seems to cut out when levels get too hot. It's like a virtual fuse has blown...

The cutout of the sound is caused by a "DC" offset added each time the sound is looped and fedback. Just add a "DC" blocker (high pass filter) to solve the problem. This attached patch has the fix.

see this thread for a discussion of the 'zipper noise' in the delay lines...

http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-7937.html

since the 8 tap doesn't have a mod input it's not feasible to apply the 'smoothness' tweak directly to that module, even via a MIDI control send/constant knob/glide combination, but i wonder if doing so with two Quad Delays and a constant knob/glide module will do the trick. sweep the constant value knob.

see the pic

*uh, what the hell? if you click on that pic (i have no idea where that came from) you'll see the one i actually uploaded of the patch i'm talking about... WEIRD!!

[moderator: yes, looks like a bug. So far, this is the first I've seen of it. It may be a fluke with moving the database over to a new server. Please don't change the picture until I've had a chance to analyze this. --mosc]

Hey, thats the picture of Tom (v-un-v) that I uploaded for the test of the new server a few days ago- the thread we did that in no longer exists, but the picture survived seemingly ... otoh, Tom had posted that pic himself before, somewhere else, and that thread should still exist ... funny ...

I'll not try to fix it as mosc might want to have a look at this.
